Line That is Quiet in the Kennel

Post by Larry G »

I have had a few that almost never make a sound in the pen....very few. And a lot that bark their heads off all night and day long. Has anyone seen that this trait (quiet) can be bred into a line of hounds? What's the noisiest and quietest lines you have owned?

I have noticed that hounds usually bark in the pen for two reasons.... highly excitable, keyed up, high energy disposition, or barking out of fear/aggression/unhappiness and I have one of each type in my pens right now, both have to wear a no bark collar which I hate to use, and the barking starts again as soon as I take them off. I'm definitely going to try to breed away from this fault in the future.

I've owned enough hounds over the years to add my opinion on this. When I ran med. speed dogs, I had 2 blue creek bear dogs that weren't very good in the kennels. I've also had a few Indian Hills dogs that were wound up pretty good. As for being quiet, all the rest of mine have always been quiet, unless a deer, fox, or rabbit comes running by :) A dog w/ bad kennel manners won't last long in my kennels, unless it's a phenomenal rabbit dog and I haven't run across that yet. Interesting topic...

I really don't think it is a trait thing. I think it is how they are raised. IMO
All hounds can be corrected with Mr. Tri Tronics!!!!!

I wont tolerate it.
However, I only keep 3 to 6 dogs.
A couple I had to put shock collars on at night. If they woke me, I shocked them. It took about 2 nights before they figured it out.

BUT, my dogs are out of the kennel almost daily. It is rare they spend more than one whole day without getting out.

The few times I haven't been able to let them run for a few days, they will start getting jumpy and more mouthy. I have a feeling the exercise has more to do with it than anything.

The only time you hear my dogs bark are when someone/something is out there.

IMO, booger barking is genetic. Some dogs are just nervous and bark at the slightest provocation. I don't remember owning a beagle that barked all night. I'm a light sleeper and me or the barking dog has to go. So far I've been able to hang around. I am understanding if the neighbors cow wanders close to the kennel when I have young dogs, they will be upset. However, once they meet the cow a couple of times it's time to settle down and let me sleep, if they value pleasant personality.

What line did you get? The quietest dog I have now is T-Rex/Northway. She runs OK but a little too fast and reckless to suit me. I want to breed her to something a little more conservative but would like to hold on to that quiet in the kennel thing.

Steve, I don't know much about the lines you mentioned, but I know of an old male close to Blue Creek Bear and Hank's Jo Jo Blue that bred a double Tiny Bull bitch just before he died. I can get some of the pups. What do you think of that breeding?

Quiet in the Kennel

Post by Big Dog »

Most of the Ninja bred dogs that I have owned were quiet in the kennel. The quietest by far are the Big Time bred dogs that I have. I lived in a subdivision in NC and would literally go weeks without hearing a dog bark. My northway dog doesn't booger bark, but will bark if another dog comes in the yard. The big time stuff that I own will not even bark at another dog, rabbit or person if they are in the pen, but if you drop them on the ground they will head straight for where they last saw the rabbit and it is on from there. Some of it is genetic, and some of it is trained. I hate kennel barking and will not tolerate it.

I agree with the exercise thing. I let mine run every am and then put them up and they sleep all day. when it stars to cool off in the evening they are ready to go again. if I let them out for a while they will be quiet all night. They are bred to run . if they cant they get worked up. I have those rabbits that are 10 ft. in front of the kennel also. That is how I train my pups.open the kennel door and see what happens. I have also got up at 2 in am after barking and whipped the fire out of them. that worked too.

I allow my dogs to bark at feeding time. I live where it don't matter if they bark, but I hate dogs that bark just to hear their heads rattle. I have a fan belt and it makes them savvy in no time. When I yell " KNOCK IT "its like a valve has been shut off. Some dogs can't learn and I have never seen one that was deprived in learning deptment that made a top hand.

I had a male that would geat mad at booger barkers and put them in their place. He died a couple years ago.

Now I have a 2 Y.O. gip that is taking his place.
If a dog is barking, she goes to look and see why.
She then takes controls and bites the barker until he clears the fence.
Then she decides if she wants to bark at it or not.

The only time I ahve trouble is when I have a gip in heat.
Then every male dog in the county is strolling through the yard looking for love. I end up taking them to my neighbor's kennel until they are out.
