Indiana Youth Rabbit Hunt

October 27, 2007 & November 10, 2007

The “Indiana Beaglers Alliance” is sponsoring its 2nd & 3rd Annual Youth Rabbit Hunts on October 27th & November 10th. Our Co-Sponsors are “Tri County Fish & Wild Life Area”, and “Salamonie Reservoir”. The first hunt took place on Tri County Fish & Wild Life Area in the fall of 2006. It went over real well. Pre-Registration is needed for both hunts. A 30-day advanced notice would be most appropriate. Each hunt will “only” be able to handle up to 30 youth. “So the sooner you register the better.” There is “NO” cost for the hunt itself, just the cost of the 2007/2008 Indiana Youth Hunting License, which is $7.00. The license can be purchased at each hunt site, and is good for the whole hunting season.

Hunt Location: Tri County Fish & Wild Life Area
Date: October 27, 2007
Hunt Organizer: Don LeCount H (574) 453-2513

Hunt Location: Salamonie Reservoir
Date: November 10, 2007
Hunt Organizer: James Heasley H (765) 674-3791 or C (765) 661-4597

Each youth will have a “private mentor” that will be supervising them during the entire hunt. Parents are more than welcome to also accompany the youth during the hunt. Rabbits will be pursued with beagles. There will be plenty of Dog handlers with beagles for the youth to hunt over. All participants “must” have attended and passed a Hunter Education Course & have a valid Indiana Youth Hunting Licensed to participate. Firearms safety will be at its “highest degree”. A youth can bring their own shotgun, or one will be provided. If we need to provide a shotgun for the youth, we need to know at the time the youth “registers” for the hunt. After the hunt lunch will be provided at no cost. Door prizes will be given away prior to lunch. There will be pictures taken after the hunt of all participants (youth, mentors, & dog handlers).

If anyone's in need of taking a Hunter Education Course, here is a link to the IDNR Website of upcoming courses:

At this time we have plenty of room for more youth hunters. We still are hunting for more mentors and dog handlers.

I might be able to help. I will have to check my trial schedule and see though. If so how many kids would go with a guide and how many dogs are you wanting for each group? I don't have any kids but would be willing to take a group out and bring some good dogs. I am an avid hunter and would like to help bring kids to hunting if I can. Also are you running state ground only or are you running private grounds?

There will hopefully be 10 groups. Each group will consist of 3 youth, 3 mentors, and one or two dog handlers. It would be nice to match up packs of about four to five dogs of the same running style. I personally will do the matching up of packs by talking with dog handlers on the phone if need be. "Most" of the packs that will have more than one dog handler will be friends that have previously discussed the issue and ran together in past years.

If we don’t have to, we don’t want to “combine responsibilities (use mentors as dog handlers)”. Using mentors as dog handlers would be ok with me personally if the mentor/dog handler was supervising his own child.

We are hunting on "State Properties":

Email me your phone number and the best time to call. I will be happy to get back with you at my earliest convenience.

“All Sporting Dog Owners, we need more dog handlers, mentors, and youth at this time. Please help promote our sport. Contact Jim Heasley if you’re willing and able to help. This is plenty of an advance notice, so there should be very few with excuses not to help.”

Hay guys & gals, we're getting youth to sign up, were getting dog handlers to sin up, but we are still behind on mentors.

Please contact me if you'd be willing to help out, or if you know of any youth that would be interested.

I can be a mentor or handler. I've run dogs with Wildhare so if you want to put us together that would be fine.
