Legal to Kill a Dog?

Post by Larry G »

Can you do it yourself (legally) or must it be done by a vet? If it is legal is there a requirement on how it is done?

An old timer once told me he practiced the triple "S" method .Triple "S" being " shoot ,shovel and shut up" .

I'm not entirely sure it's really legal to do it yourself, but if a guy were to end a dogs life, hopefully it would be quick and with the least amount of suffering.

Dogs are essentially our "Property" Unless your in pansy wansy Colorado where your their "guardian" LOL Anyway, I would believe that its legal to kill your OWN dog in a humane manner as long as you don't violate any gun laws.

I like this method for a bad dog (one that bites or just isn't worth the $$ and hassle at the vets)...but for my personal favorites I'd rather have them euthanized at the vets, cremated seperatley, and saved to be mixed with my ashes when I go.

Here in Michigan it is a misdemeanor to kill your own dog, a felony to kill someone elses dog. Triple S seems about right however.... :shhh:

If a horse breaks a leg you shoot it, right? I've done that myself and I can't imagine that would be a crime anywhere. I've also blown away a dog that was mangled all to hell in a steel trap. So, did Vick have the right to kill his own dogs? The dog pound kills about 80 a month here by gassing them.

Yes he had the right to put down his dogs but it was the manner in which he did this. HUMANLY is the key word. His manner of putting them down was just icing on the cake to his prosecution. The really bad part was letting dogs rip each other apart for sport or group intertainment.

first what did the dog do,,,,,the only way id shoot a dog was if he was destroying property or threating someone by trying to bite them

now if it was my hunting partner i would never have the heart to shoot a dog if it was from old age or from an accident,,,,,,,

just my opinion,,,,which isnt worth much,,,

SAY WHAT!!?????? I have had some wonderful dogs go on before me. They are buried on our property. I'd like to put a sort of memorial plaque or something someday to honor them. If we ever move and someone digs up the place they might be surprised ;-) I been here a LONG time!

Had he done it humanely then perhaps however he was engaging in illegal activity in the first place. However you feel about it he plead guilty and he has to do his time. I hope he has to council kids about what not to do to screw up your entire life. He is NOT a roll model thats for sure.
