Its super easy isn't it ;-) I never get rear dews but, I take off the front ones too.

Sounds like using the hemostats might be the way to go! I'll take the pup with me to the vet Monday morning and see what he suggests. Where can I buy some hemostats?
I bought a pair of hemostats to use if I ever have another litter. I cut or more accurate crushed the ones off the last litter with a very dull pair of side cutters - very little bleeding. I was thinking about flattening out the edge even more with a file to dull them even more. Also, I have had good luck removing warts by crushing them with the hemostats - small ones only take one quick "crushing" and the bleeding is not too bad.

nail clippers is all i have ever used usually at 2 or 3 days old works just fine jb
Do the nail clippers crush the tissue and blood vessels or just cut? The advantage of the hemostats is that it crushes all that stuff and there is very little scaring or bleeding. The skin actually sticks together.
the clippers actually cut the dew claws off i try to get the clippers as close to the leg as i can, nothing to it bout like my head thats what my dad use to tell me very lil bleeding
My old nippers don't have much of a edge to them any more and they work fine, matter of fact, that's how they come to be used for this, they were "old". If the toe will still fit between the jaw opening of the nippers, they will be ok to use, if they've outgrown the jaw opening, I've used small sidecut pliers(their old and dull also) to nip them off with, just use alcohol to disinfect them.
The hemostats would work good too, but I don't have any handy around here. Maybe for Christmas... ...they would be good to have around if a bitch chewed off a cord to short or some such thing.
I had a little stapler from the vet supply one time that had small stainless staples, was good for closing wounds or tears on pups/hounds (beats needle and fishing line...lol)...

Well then guys! if they work they work. Thats all that matters. One thing I do like about the hemostats is that I can get way under the nail and when I clamp down I can see the nail pop out of the skin so, I know I got it good.
Patch.. if you need hemostats for xmas man...I'll wrap ya some up with a big red bow

Now you got me kinda cornfused Leah, I'm talkin bout takin the hole toe off, not just the nail. I want flush with the leg, soft cartledge(yet to become bone) at the first joint off the main leg. It's like takin your thumb off at the main joint.
Are you talkin bout just takin the toenail off...or am I reading you wrong...
ps...the offer of the Christmas present was mighty nice of you

I take the whole toe same as you do. Flush with the leg. I want a nice healed area and hopefully no scaring. With the hemostats I can see that I got it all the way when that nail pops out the top of the toe when I clamp down. I go right along the underside of the whole toe as close to the bone as I can. Then clamp down and let the clamp stay for about 15 seconds.
Took the pup to the Vet today. He just sprayed some alcohol on the area and snipped both of them right off. Pup had some minor bleeding. Pup is 18 days old! He charged me $5.00.
