Greetings again all!
It would appear, from the staggering response to my last message ;-), that there are no clubs in CO, perhaps I will start one!
At any rate, as I have not trained beagles before and am struggling with how to train / what to do...I figured why not ask some questions here. I have read many of the books on the subject with little avail, considering that everyone has their own technique.
I have been looking at E-Collars and am unable to decide what to use, what does everyone else use for Beagling?
I am in the process of whistle training for basic commands (sit, come etc...) are there any special commands that I should work on with a Beagle?
As I have never Beagled before (and don't really know any Beaglers), what considerations should I take the first time that I take my Beagle out to the field for an actual hunt, up to this point he is only yard trained. Specifically, my concerns are what to expect (granted each dog is different), but some basic pointers as to what to look for, what to be concerned with, and what to do etc...
I realize that I just covered a HUGE amount of territory, but any and all input is greatly appreciated!
If anyone is ever in the CO area, feel free to drop a line and teach me a thing or two ;-)
Thanks again,
~Dr J.

I sold a couple pups to a guy in Craig, CO. His name is Larry Sanders and his phone number is (970)824-4051. I am sure that he would help you out and probably run dogs with you if he was close enough.

ADVICE
MORNING CRAZY, YOU CAN LOOK ON THESE BOARDS & USUALLY PICK UP A PUP TRAINER AT A REASONABLE PRICE. THE DOG WILL BE OLDER BUT JUST MAKE SURE IT DOESN'T RUN OFF GAME & CAN CIRCLE A RABBIT. THEN TAKE IT TO YOUR HUNTING PLACE & WATCH IT & THE PUP. YOU WILL BOTH LEARN AT THE SAME TIME. IT'S A BLAST.

I would by a TRITRONIC E collar if I thought I needed it. One with the most range I could afford. Your yard traing will more than likely aviod the need for one for awhile. Maybe alltogether. When you take your dog to the field hope for the best expect the least, you do not say how old it is so it is hard to predict what will happen. If it's in it's genes it will start if you give it the oppurtunity. Good luck to you.
Great Info!
All,
Thanks for the info! This guy is just a smidgen over 10 months old, and I have been doing allot of yard-training with him. The yard training has gone well, he is well disciplined and comes to both command and whistle well -- to include other standard verbal and whistle commands. If his desire to chase rabbits is any indicator, he will hopefully be a good gun dog! I take him for walks along a trail behind the house (on-leash) where there are many rabbits (good and bad I suppose, as there is so much scent that he goes nuts) while he is on leash, I run with him when he gives chase etc.....
Tomorrow will be his first off-leash experience with guns etc... I hope that all goes well and will let you know!
Assuming that he gives chase etc..is it basically a guarantee that he will circle back to basically the same point that he started during the chase? I ask because I have never really done this before..and of course am somewhat alarmed at the thought of loosing my dog, or having to search for him!
Thanks again for the advice! If anyone ever wants info for training Labs etc...that's where I come from traditionally.
Regards,
~Dr. J
