We still have plenty of room for more youth, and I know we could use mentors also.

Dog handlers are signing up the fastest.

I’m sure there are many more “Hoosier” rabbit hunters that are willing to help, but I would appreciate it if you would let me know ASAP so I don’t have to “stress out” for the next month or more. :)

Thanks!

The Salamonie Hunt currently has 15 youth, 13 mentors, & 9 dog handlers signed up. We have gotten off to a good start, but we’re only half way there.

There still is a lot of Hoosier Beaglers that are not stepping forward to support our youth in this endeavor. Don’t be selfish guys & gals; the youth are the future of our sport. We better support them and bring them up right. I’ve heard many excuses for many Beaglers “including members of my own beagle club”. Here are a few popular excuses:
1) I can’t commit yet. I need to wait to see if there are any trials that weekend.
My ANSWER: That's what I call “putting your priorities in order”. That pure selfishness! WE need to give back to our sport. Youth is the answer!
2) I can’t make plans yet. I’ve got to see what comes up.
My ANSWER: If this isn’t important enough to set aside 1-Day for a child you’re a selfish man! You will reap what you sow. They probably won’t receive any more favors from me “that’s for sure”.

I will have to commend a few members from my home beagle club:
-I really appreciate Tim Rayn announcing the Salamonie Youth Hunt in his hunter education class, and I also want to thank Nick Inglis for putting an article about the Youth Hunts in his column he right's for in the “Gad-About News Paper”.

Our hunting & gun rights are “constantly under attack” guys & gals. You should also consider this good PR (Public Relations). The reports of these youth hunts will be in many local newspapers and several magazines across Indiana. There is a good possibility some of the local television stations will be covering these hunts. This will only help improve our image “in the eyes of the public”. I’m personally not helping organizing these hunts for this reason. My personal reward is: to see the expression on a child’s face “after a rewarding hunting experience with a pack of beagle hounds”. This is something money can’t buy! I really enjoy taking a child hunting.

Salamonie Youth Rabbit Hunt-November 10, 2007

We’re now filled up with 30 youth (I’m starting an alternates list at this time just incase of cancellations), we have 25 mentors, & 8 dog handlers. We need at least 2 more dog handlers, and 5 more mentors so we don’t have to turn away any of the youth that are already signed up.

Up to this point I’ve been trying to find mentors that have a considerable amount experience hunting with beagles, and firearms safety. But at this time I’m mainly concerned with firearms safety and that they have past a Hunter Education Course. All mentors will need a Small Game Hunting License if they don’t already have one.

We still need 2 more dog handlers & 3 more mentors.

We’re currently at “full capacity” with 30 youth, and we have 3 alternates on the list at this time. Several more youth have called asking details pertaining to “Hunter Education Classes” so they can get qualified to go if any of the other youth cancel. I will hate to turn them away.

I would sure appreciate it if some more of you “Hoosier Beaglers” would step forward to support this event. These hunts are “for the betterment & the future of are sport”. Most mature and logical adults can see this. Consider it an investment in the future of Rabbit Hunting and Field Trialing.
