I don't think that just because of the size is going to matter that much. I have seen small dogs smoke big ones. I say run what you bring!!!

I agree 100 %, but rules are rules. If the limit is raised to 16, some people will bring 16 1/2 inch dogs. Offical measuring won't help either. I've seen dogs in akc that were 14- 14 1/4 that were offical measured at 13. Anywhere there is competion there is some cheating! I know when i go to a trial the playing field is not level, that's why i just go to a few and try to just have fun.

People are afraid to measure a dog that they know is over because if that person judges them the next round they may "retaliate" against them.
It is the truth. Why should they get mad? they know they are packing a dog that is over 15. IF you get caught..you get caught. Don't be mad..be thankful you ever got him in a cast. The times I was measured I just let them measure and go on. I know some of my dogs are under but are right on. Some get upset when they know it is a rule..they know they are packing a big dog..and it is the other handlers right to ask for a measurement on the rule which says 15 inches?

Somebody in the cast is gonna have a 15 inch hound and it might as well be me. Keep them under..if the rules change then we can too.
I do feel if there was an official measurement. then handlers coulnd't question it..it would take a little confrontation out. The officials coudl handle it and we wouldn't have to think about it.

Run whatever you like. But don't get upset if someone exercises thier right to measure. It is a rule.

it just sucks to put a lot of time in a dog that is right at 15,then you go to the world hunt,get through one or two rounds,then,because talk is goin around how your dog is really lookin good and could go on to win it all,someone hears this,measures it in the next round,the moh props the dog up like it is at a dog show,and your done!!!!!!!!!!!!

if it was ok to run in round 1 and 2,then why measure now.i think another rule should be,if you want to have a dog measured,do it in the first round,not later after the dog is shown to be tough.

All ARHA would have to Do is the Same as UKC measure all Dogs before they are entered that day! If your Over you Dont Run!

Set the stand at 15" walk the dog up put its feet under it Drop the stand over the Dog if you dont wobble your in........

Now that being said if they Do start the over 15" class I have one I will run!!!
But until then you will never see him at a hunt.....

If you have a dog that you know is close then you decide if you want to take the risk that it will get measured and be too big. If you don't like the results of taking that risk then bring a smaller dog. Don't blame the standards or the people doing the measuring. You're the one that decided to take the risk. I run big dogs and know that they could get measured out. I don't say that the standard should be changed just because I have a dog that measures out.

Rather than trying to adjust the standard to your dog, adjust to the standard and run dogs that meet it.

We all know that 15 inch is the rule, and it always has been. Why should it be changed for a few dogs, or people. RULES ARE NOT MADE TO BE BROKE. The should not be bent for no one, no matter who you are. I dont have dogs measured, I will let my dogs run with any cast, size dont win, its the dogs nose and brains, not his size. But 15 is the rule, I will not run a dog over 15.

I agree with TC. Years ago when ARHA was going through this same thing, when you signed up the breed insp. would be at the beginning of the line with the jig. If you were over 15 you didnt sign that dog up.
This does not solve everything but it did eliminate wasting your entry fee and being measured later after advancing to your next round.

excacty............the way i see it,nkc has looked down on dogs over 15 saying they cannot run,and now,they wanna set up a new format for the over 15 dogs,well,if they are over 15 and considered still a beagle.

i have two hounds that are 13 in class in akc,i will put them against any 16 or 17 in dog under lp rules and still beat them.

how does that extra 1/2 to inch help a dog under lp rules,so it MAY be a lil faster,does lp award points for speed and drive,no,a 15 1/2 in dog has no advantage under lp rule than a 13 in dog.size does not hunt or check!!!!!!


but before you say it,i know,rules are rules and ya have to have them.


so change them then i say......bring on the thoroughbreds,i can still win with my lil ponies

Something to ponder on?????? should we concern ourselves on oversized hounds and not worry about undersized hounds(pocket beagles). Which brings the most money when sold, which is being bred for profit?
Money is what makes this world go round ( unfortunately ). So, where should we start to preserve the breed standards?
Just something to think about.......................................not trying to rob someone elses thread.

If they have a class for over 15" then they should have a class for under say 12". You see it will never end. NKC should find a better way to enforce the 15" rule instead of avoiding conflict and starting another size class for the oversized. If they do I'm bringing a tri-color Walker rabbithound.

I think all hounds should be measured before entry.

It will take more time but we would not be talking about this if that was happening.

ALL the dogs should be measured before entry!!!!! The dogs should be STOOD correctlly and the bar should be on top of the withers. If the dog is over you will not enter the hunt.

I remember going to Little Pack hunts years ago and they measured before you could enter. It was the club option, and they did it. Clubs hosting big hunts should do this!!!!!!!!

I wonder how many entries would be turned away if people new there hound was going to be PROPERLLY measured before the hunt.

There are so many OVERSIZED hounds out there running and it isnt right. I am not saying they are not AWESOME hounds but it is 15".

There is not any oversized hounds in Progressive Pack....and if there is one there someone will have it measured and it will mearsured out. I have seen MOH's measure dogs cause they looked big and that is what should be going on. It should be part of his job to make sure the dogs entered in his hunt are under 15".

In UKC Hunting Beagle format all dogs are measured before entry, I am not sure about Performance pack format. In AKC large pack format, all dogs are measured before the trial, in AKC small pack option you can pre-measure, but they only require measuring those that make the winners pack. I have seen some good size dogs get measured in, but I have also seen some dogs measured out. I have seen it in every registry and format that I run. I try to run as close to 15" as I can, I run both AKC and UKC with the same dogs. My best dog is a 13 3/4" female that I have to run in 15" class in AKC, she's a great little dog but another inch of leg would sure be helpful sometimes, especially running hard against 15 1/2"- 16" dogs. I believe we should breed according to standards set by which ever registry we prefer, keeping in mind the betterment of the breed and not just speed. I believe the Beagles on Fox trials have a 17" height limit, it works for them, but I would think too big for cottontails.

Yep, pretty much the way I feel.
I think most everyone that read the last few threads about size knows how I feel.
Rules are rules, and 15" is a standard for a reason (better suited as a gun dog).
