I use to feed my beagles twice a day until I spoke with an old timer who told me if I switched to once a day feeding the dogs would last longer, so far it has served me well. I gained a couple hours a day just by once a day feeding.

I have put as much s 60 hours hunting on 2 of my dogs in one week

if a dog is in reasonable shape it should be able to hunt 5 to 6 hours a day 2 to 3 days in a row

Mine will go all day if there are rabbits. If we're hunting and hunting and hunting and no rabbits are to be found, I only have 1 dog that will hunt all day and at the end of the day he's still hunting like he was the 1st hour. Never seen anything like him! Most of my dogs are done by 1 or 2 p.m. which is why I run 2 packs.

My dogs will run all day if there is a rabbit to run. They usually slow down after about 5 to 6 hours. I do have one that will hunt all day and all day the next day but then I have to let him rest for a couple of days. I think that the terain and weather have alot to do with how long the dogs will go.

I've got a couple that will hunt All Day Every day rabbits or not they stay buisy. A guy down the road from also has one. The others need to stay in rabbits or they are look'n to be sic'd in the brush after about 5 hours. This is something people to start looking at. Some guys are saying mine will keeping going as long as they're are rabbits I have a few like that too, but the ones that KEEP THEMSELVES buisy is what really dictates an all day everyday dog. Alot of the blitz blood is doing this. I'm not look'n to be criticized but people who have seen the dogs know its true if ya have doubts come on over i'll show ya.

Conditioning/desire

Post by mybeagles »

I owned a mother/son pair that would run all night twice a week (7-9hrs). These two dogs had great hunt/desire and were in impeckable condition. The longest they ever went was 14 hours. At that point they were walking the track. IMO this is too long, and took them 4-5 days to recover.
Much easier to do long runs at night on hare. Hare run really good at night and races of 2-3 hours without significant breakdown are common. Piggyback 3 together and you have a full night of running. If dogs are coming in or quit hunting after 4 hours they are most likely not in shape but some may just lack desire.
I have a personal limit of 8 hours with my hounds, but have seen a few well conditioned trial dogs go longer.
Its gets a little impractical to keep the same hounds on the ground for more that 6-8 hours.

Have to disagree with the once a day feeding. I feed twice a day, and increase each feeding during heavy conditioning. With once a day in order to get maximum effect you would have to feed before running and most vets will advise against heavy feeding before the hunt.
Lets be real though, how many guys hunt over 6 hours straight with same dogs? This is getting real technical, but it could make slight difference when pushing the extreemes. Dave
