A swinging dog in rabbits will beat you to a pulp but put him in a place that had to find rabbit and he will beat himself.

I was just discussing this with a friend the other day because I could never understand why people get to arguing over this stuff. To me it boils down to the fact that there are different formats with different rules so that everyone can have a chance to compete no matter what style hounds you have and like to run. I have never understood the problem with that. I guess if someone wants to say that their hounds are better than someone else's hounds because the format they choose means they have a better dog than someone in a different format then that's their choice. My hounds run a cleaner line than my buddy's, his hounds are very aggressive and can really run. Some days mine look better, some days his look better. Any day we put them together they all look great. If we only had one format for dogs that did everything perfectly you would see a lot less people competing. And mind you I'm not defending any one format. If you don't like a dog that swings then don't run that type of a dog but don't bash the rules for that format either. There are people who like to run that style and in my opinion that's their business, it's not me to tell them what to do.

Jeremy, I am not trying to be offensive to you. I went back and read your post.Sounds like to me you answered both of your questions. You stated that you attended 2 trials in the last month and watched several cast run.You watched more than enough to see what type dogs were at the trial. The good and bad. I assume you also seen how the scoring was determined. You stated that you consider it a fault if dogs reach out or over run 70-100 yards..Sounds like to me you answered that question for yourself as well... Out of all the things I have read on this board. The one that sticks with me the most and I don't remember who said it.Shows how old I am getting LOL.....Is a man's ego is a heavy weight for a dog to carry...

Jeremy, like mud said I think you answered your own question. Certain things are acceptable in one format and are not in others. If you ask me is it ok for a dog to swing out in my pack, and I mostly just rabbit hunt, then for me the answer is "no". I want the dog to run the rabbit not just try to get in front. But again some formats allow that type of a thing so according to the rules of that particular format no it is not a minus.

i think the best way to understand a format is to learn the rules and judge in that format for awhile...u will really c a dogs faults in that format...i know that there is alot of gun hunters on here that doesnt like swingin dogs...i know alot of dogs that do this and u can kill rabbits with them all day long....just feed and run what u like...thats all it boils down to...

I agree with Duke ,and every dog has his day just like good days at a trial or out gun hunting on a good day a fast and driveing dog should do well as on the bad scent days a slow walker with a good nose should be doing most of the work---just the way i see it
