field trial questions

Post by bunyonhillbeagles »

I have always had beagles and hunted them but now I am interested in field trial and I have no idea how they actually run. If anyone can help, i would thank you

I am going to try to make tis as simple as possable (Ha Ha Ha)

First of all, there are several different organizations that sanction field trials: AKC
AHRA
UKC
PKC
ETC...
Second, Within each of the oganizations there are clubs for dogs that run different styles:
SPO
Little Pack
Progressive Pack

Now the rules vary for each of these organizations and clubs, but they basicly all work the same way. The dogs are taken out in casts of 4,5, or 6 dogs at a time. Points are awarded for strikeing on a rabbit, jumping a rabbit, and checking a trail. Points are deducted for ghosttrailing, etc..

What I would suggest is you post the type of dogs you have (fast, med. fast, med. slow slow, straight line or swinging) and let some of these fine fellows point you in the right direction. Also let us know where you are located and we can Hook you up with a club.

If I have left anything out I'm sure the board will let you know.

Good Luck
Jeff

Thank you for your help, I live in Oswego,Ny it is in the central part of the state. The only two dogs I have right now are both about nine months old. They are both very good hunters, but I a'm not sure what speed they are. How can I tell what speed they are? And do you know anyone in my parts I can talk to?
Thank you

New York has a storied past when it comes to beagles. If you hunt mostly cottontail then you'll probably want to check out the SPO trials- plenty to choose from. For hare hunters, there's Large Pack or SPO- Hare. There must be over a dozen clubs in NY- I'm sure you'll have no problem finding a club whose members have similar interests in hounds as you.
