Beagle Craze has hit.....Beagle Pups are in demand

Post by Joeyman »

With Uno winning best in show. It was on the radio this morning that Beagle's are in demand and that people are looking for them.

What do you guys think about this? People buying them because it's the lastest craze.

I do have a female in heat right now I could breed her and sell the pups for some money but.......I don't think I'll do it.

I think its good for the beagle breed, but remember we all went through a phase, it will run out sometime. Labradors are still the highest AKC Dog....

I breed for me and sell few of the litter not to often and if some one gets good beagle thats great i think enough of what im doing to put two years in it to see how good or bad i made choice ......lets hope it dont get out hand .there been many of lab breed just to get lab not saying some are not good breeders

You could probably sell them for 200 a piece. Bad thing is they will go as pets.

Yep

people are going to start breeding who knows what with who knows what and come up with beagle pups that are not going to help the hunter out. It might hurt the beagle hunting dog. Going to make a person research harder when buying a hunting beagle.

It's not good for the breed. Puppy mills will be running overtime. In a few years the breed will suffer with an explosion of faulty hounds.

Same thing happened when the movie Shilo came out. Beagle pups in demand.
Next time you are in town, take a walk through your local animal shelter. Count all the purebred beagles you see. :( Ask yourself if you want to ADD to this problem. In a perfect world Shilo will grow up in a loving home as some family pet. In the REAL world that is only true for a few. MANY PET OWNERS are irrisponsible! Even the ones you screen well. They will leave them in the back yard and forget about them when they grow up a little or they will get tired of the barking or the dog tearing up trash because it is bored out of its mind so they haul it off on some dirt road to let it starve to death thinking somone might pick it up or if they are KIND they dump them off at the pound.

I had sold a few pups as pets years ago but one phone call broke me from it.......
A lady had purchased one from me about 2 years earlier and was looking for a playmate. She was telling me how great the dog was but she was having a problem. She had to buy a shock collar for the dog to stop this problem.
Ok here is the problem. Seems the dog started himself on rabbits. It would make her SO MAD that the dog was running after them poor rabbits she would SHOCK him for it. I still get a sick feeling when I think about that. That dog was getting punished for doing what he was BRED to do and had such a STRONG DESIRE he started HIMSELF!!!!!! What a great dog he might have made a hunter or trialer but he is doomed to a life of hell. I explained this to her in a nice way (as nice as I could anyways). Needless to say I told her I didn't have anything and probably wouldn't for a long time, that she should look elsewhere. No more "Pet" puppies from my kennel.

i am very picky on who gets my pups,i like to see them all go to field trialers and hunter.

i refuse to sell one for a pet...unless......something one ends up really small,or really big,but they usually end up in gun hunters hands.

Yeah the Amish puppy mills in this state are licking their chops thinking about it. They were in the news around here this summer talking about the conditions they breed dogs under. Hopefully it doesn't happen.

Any pup we breed will go to a hunting home. If not they will be given away to friends/family. So far we've had no problem getting all pups into hunters' hands. The only time we breed though is if we want pups from a certain cross and normally keep 2 for ourselves. It's true that beagles are probably the most common purebred dog in the pounds or shelters (at least around here).

There are already too many people over breeding to try to make a buck. Watch the trading pages.......you always see the same guys with broke dogs, started or pups.

I have to tell you how much respect I have for you for saying that.

One of mine is in whelp right now, and I'm planning another litter for the late spring - the first time I've ever had two litters so close together, and I'm REALLY re thinking the timing of the second one. I agree with you that I could use the extra $ from the quick sale of pups, but I have a conscience. Actually, I do sell the majority of my pups as pets, because I'm in the city & hunters are few and far between. My pet homes are screened with a fine tooth comb. I have an application, and on it I ask the question "What do you expect the activity level of this breed to be?" Also have a pros/cons page about the breed, which has been helpful in getting better buyers.

The dilemma here is that the breed does inherently make an awesome, reliable family pet. Ok, I know I'm biased, lol, but IMHO, they are the BEST family pet due to size, tolerance, hardiness, etc. But they're certainly not the right pet for every family, and for every litter I either talk several people out of the breed altogether or can rest my head at night knowing at least they are not getting a pup from me, I fulfilled my responsibility to that pup. Pet people can be the best, if you find ones that are dog intelligent or just "Beagle people". On that same note, they can be a nightmare if a nutter slips through the cracks.

This is JMHO, now, take it for what it's worth. I'm already seeing a surge in hits on my website, & it's not even currently advertised. If we choose to sell to pet homes, we'll have to work overtime sorting out the good ones from the muck. I am thinking of selling my pups @ 10 weeks and having the pets altered before they leave. I'm terrified of a puppy mill or unethical breeder getting their hands on one and starting their own fly by night breeding operation by standing on my shoulders & using my bloodlines to make a buck. Now, this is the USA, and none of us need to be ashamed of making a profit if our litters are more in demand, BUT, we can make some extra and do it responsibly. We can ask a few simple questions to buyers and sell pups on limited registration w/ a spay/neuter contract. My contract negates my entire health guarantee if pup is not s/n in the specified time ... you should see how many Vet statements I get mailed since I started that

I believe the largest threat to this breed is to end up in the hands of a puppy mill. This is a great time to start raising prices, because millers will not want to spend much on the purchase price (cuts into their profit @@). And on the whole, we need to be more selective who we sell to. There are some unscrupulous people out there, they will use alternate regestries to register pups on limited reg., etc. We have so much to loose if we sell to just anybody, and the implications go far beyond a mass surrendering of Beagles in shelters. Remember what excessive popularity did to the German Shepherd, Doberman, Rottweiler, etc. Now more than ever before we need to be ANAL about who gets to own this breed ... My 2 cents
