To you other folks that say you wouldn't breed to a show dog...You might not end up with a topnotch hunting dog within the first whelp but it takes time and several building blocks...witch is how we better the breed to begin with, some of you that say you wouldn't breed to a show hound will swear that you are bettering the breed,BUT how do we better the breed if our hunting dogs can't handle the phiscal work it takes to hunt day in day out....TO MANY dogs I see in mags winning trials look like dismebered aliens.

Again congrats to UNO!!
Good conformation is a must, but performance is first.
Also, you comment on the poorly built dogs can't run all day.
That is true to an extent for major faults, but the hounds that I have seen run all day are typically longer than they are tall and have bigger feet than show dogs.
Take another look at it, if the best conformation meant best performance how come dogs built exactly to the breed standard are not winning in any field format? Trust me, they are there just not doing the job.
Maybe the breed conformation was an opinion from a group that standardized what they liked, not really what indicated the best performance.

I can appreciate Uno's accomplishments, and I do not want to take away from it all.
However, I can show you dogs with enough faults that they should never place in a bench show, but are consistent performers in the field, winners on a national level, and consistent reproducers of fine rabbit and hare hounds.
[cough]branko dogs[cough]
They may not be a picture of a beagle, but you can't argue the performance results.

I watched UNO win that best of show for the hunting breed and i thought he should have won it, as for perfection, you can;t find a perfect person except for JESUS himself so how can you find a perfect dog. but he is as near as i have seen in my 50years of being around beagles. TAIL, TAKE A BRUSH AND COMB OUT THE UNDERSIDE OF YOUR DOGS TAIL. AND TRIM OFF THE LONG HAIRS ON THE END . YOU MIGHT HAVE UNO IN YOUR PIN. CONGRADULATIONS UNO YOUR THE BEST OF THE REST .

Was it the "Hunting breed" or the "Hound breed" :?:

Using "Hunting breed" might be a bit misleading... :???:

Actually, Poodles belong in the hunting group, too. They were bred for waterfowl retrieving.

(Uno's win has really stuck in your craw, eh? LOL. ;) )

It's only been a week, Patch. This is big. I've seen announcements for club hunts stay stickied longer, and pictures stay at the top longer. We will eventually move on...like we always do. Don't be so impatient. :haha:

Just wondering, how much do you think one of UNO's pups would cost? Not that I want one I just want to know.

I'm kust kidding with you Bev...
I think this is great, any experience god/bad is something to learn from.
Do you have the book "Breeding A Strain Of Better Beagles" ?
That's the great thing about this Country, people are free to do what they want. The most we hope for is that they educate themselves on the task before hand, and any informative help we can offer is free... ;)

I don't have the book, Patch, but Joe West used to swear by it. Well...not SWEAR...I can't imagine Joe swearing (lol). Anybody know if he's still in New York and still running beagles?
