well preach, here it is,i just bought this dog from a guy i know,i have ran with him since he was a young hound,i never noticed him doin this before,he may quit.
but,how about this........
i was told a hour or so ago about an cast that had a simular thing happen two weeks ago, dogs where hunting in a field and a young boy came walkin down the road along side the field, one of the dogs looked at the boy and started barking at him,so,what would you do?
the judge used his head and did not put the dog on the clock,he explained that what happend was clearly not the dog harking in,well, why should my dog be any different?
ironton ohio, about 6 months ago,i am on a cast in the champions,a male comes up behing a female that all the males had been acting very interested in,the judge refused to scratch her,she was swollen but not bleeding, well, this male sniffs her and tries to get frisky, she snapps and barks 4 or 5 barks, she broke silence right?well, she wasnt put on the clock either and went on to win the cast by 10 points over my dog.

C.3. "opens on the track." I believe that in C.1. that opening on a rabbit track is implied. Judging is not scorekeeping, it is interpreting the rules as closely as is humanly possible. Judges on the bench do this every day. It is no simple thing to keep personal feelings or emotion out of any judgment we make in life, but making proper judgment invokes some common sense as well. I held up from scoring a hound a strike one time because it was making this strange squealy sound. I made note of when it made the third one, and then another hound opened with nice barks. I made a note of the time on this one too. Thankfully, the rabbit was jumped by the hound that clearly barked before 3 minutes was up on the squealy one. When they ran by me, the squealy mouthed hound was making the same squealy sound. 10+ for the squealy hound, 30+ for the hound with the really nice mouth. If they had gone 3 minutes from the squealy hound's third squeal, I would have had to have made a JUDGMENT as to whether or not this was the hound's natural bark. This isn't even in the same county as a hound plainly making a few excited yelps, which I don't put it on the clock for unless its head is down and is clearly tracking game and I have evidence that the sound is its natural bark. The big factor here is if the hound is tracking or just glad to be here. If the happy barking hound is crazy and barks all over the place, it will get minused and probably minus out for pulling hounds out of the check area or something else anyway. If a hound is excited and quits it after a couple of yelps, no big deal. The big factor then is consistency, if others were to happy bark in another cast I judge, don't put them on the clock either. We are promoting rabbit hounds. If one is excited to be hunting enough to yelp a couple of times, it will usually outgrow the yelping. Sometimes a little juice helps it outgrow it faster. I have one rught now that is a hard hunter that used to do it some, but was persuaded that it isn't a good thing.

Im sorry...but if someone told me hey my dog may happy chirp or do some kinda bark...those words would mean to me...hey my dog may open early but hope it dont minus out-----i would tell him or her well if the dog opens his mouth unless stuck in a fence not being able to get out or some kind of pain was in process...sorry ur dog will be going on the clock...thats about the same thing is someone saying i have the best field trial dog there ever was but if someone runs in on him like a judge he gets scared and runs to the truck...well buddy i guess he isnt the best field trial dog ever seeing the fact he cant prove it under a field trial rule book
I have owned some dogs that would start opening if they wasnt the first off the lead or took u a min. to get them off and i let every dog off the lead first and if they went to bark or something i jerk the lead and tell them to shutup and till they stopped whineing i wouldnt let them off the lead but when they stopped i let them off...also helps if running dogs leave a dog or 2 aloose walking back to the truck and they get use to it

Jr, I understand where you are coming from, but I have been on casts when there were only 2 or three strikes were all that were scored. All rabbits prodcued were either moved by a judge or by the entire pack so that no jump could be awarded and then there were no breakdowns. In such a case, the dog that is put on the clock without smelling rabbit could conceivably win without even getting in on a race. That wouldn't be right either. This is a good discussion, and we need to keep it going with some things that have really happened to others.

Re: YOU MAKE THE CALL
Ain't never ran a hound in a trial but am thinking about it. Bought a little bluetick gyp off of Steve Mikkelson (and let me just say for what i like she's a world class hound, but keep in mind I ain't never ran her under any rulebook) but as far as the question in hand I think if a guy knows his hound and is honest with himself and the judge the judge should take things into consideration that's why he's called the judge and is supposed to make JUDGEMENT calls when judging a cast.
Keep it coming fellas i think i might be learning a thing or two and God knows a guy could always stand to learn a little more than he knew an hour ago!

Re: YOU MAKE THE CALL
ok danny there is no personal attack on u about the dog .. if u just got it then it is still up to u tho to fix this prob as u know it will continute to be a prob. jr walker gave some good tips. many of us that have trialed much at all have seen some crazy stuff happen./the example u gave danny i was put on the clock and lost in the fianls almost same thing i even told the judge put me on the clock cause he looked confussed about what to do ....if my all the sudden stupid dog had kept his mouth shut i might have won.but he didnt and in my mind didnt deserve to win.if i had been hunting and he came up and barked at one of my buddies i;d slapped his head.

HEY DANNY! THE PREACH ISN'T TELLING NO FIB BEACAUSE THE CAST HE IS TALKING ABOUT HAPPENED A LITTLE OVER A YEAR AGO IN ESTIL SPRINGS,TN IN DEC. OF 2006 AND I SAT DOWN ON A GRAVEL PILE IN FRONT OF THE DOG THERE 4 MINUTES LEFT IN THE CAST AND HIS HOUND FOR SOME ODD REASON LOOKED UP AT ME AND BARKED 4 TIMES. THE HOUND WAS MINUSED AND I FEEL RIGHTFULLY SO! MY GRANDFATHER'S DOG WON BECAUSE OF THAT I FEEL THE SAME WAY AS THE PREACH FEELS BECAUSE IF IT WAS VICE VERSA THEN MY HOUND WOULD OF BEEN MINUSED. HERE'S ANOTHER CAST: A FEW YEARS AGO AT THE WORLD HUNT I WAS JUDGING AND WHEN I TOLD THE 5 HANDLERS TO RELEASE THEIR HOUNDS THEY DID AND 4 STAYED RIGHT AT THEIR FEET. ONE HOUND STARTED HUNTING SO I FOLLOWED THAT HOUND BUT STAYED WITH IN SEEING DISTANCE OF THE OTHER 4 AND THEIR HANDLERS. THE OTHER 4 WERE DOING THE USUAL DOG THING. WE KNOW HOW MALES ARE SOMETIMES. WELL THE ONE HOUND GETS ABOUT 10 FEET FROM A BIG BRIAR PATCH AND SUDDENLY YOU COULD TELL SOMETHING WAS WRONG! THE HOUND ALL SUDDEN PUTS HIS TAIL BETWEEN HIS LEGS AND BARKS ABOUT 5 OR 6 TIMES LOOKING BACK AS HE RUNS BETWEEN ME AND THE BRIAR PATCH. HIS HANDLER TELLS ME THAT HE KNOWS HIS HOUND AND THERE IS A COYOTE IN THAT BRIAR PATCH. WELL WHAT AM I SUPPOSE TO DO? BECAUSE THE HOUND IS DOING WHAT HE'S SUPPOSE TO DO AND THATS PROTECT HIS OWNER. I PUT THE HOUND ON THE CLOCK BECAUSE OF THE RULES AND WATCHED AS THE OTHER HOUNDS CAME OUT ONE SIDE OF THE BRIAR PATCH AFTER GOING IN TO SEE WHAT WAS GOING ON. BY THIS TIME THE HOUND I HAD ON THE CLOCK WAS AT HIS OWNER FEET WITH HIS EYES LOCKED ON THE BRIAR PATCH. THE COYOTE RAN OUT THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BRIAR PATCH AS ALL THE HOUNDS RETURNED TO THEIR MASTERS FEET. I DIDN'T WANT TO MINUS THIS HOUND AND IT COST THE HOUND THE CAST BUT THATS THE WAY IT GOES SOMETIMES. HOPE YOU GET HIM STRAIGHTENED OUT WIN SOME HUNTS WITH IT. uNTIL THEN RUN THEM HARD AND SMILE CAUSE THATS WHATS LIFES ALL ABOUT.
