Ivermectin
I am planning on starting to use Ivermectin for treatment for worms, mites, etc. and I was wondering if i should buy the Ivomec or the Ivermectin sold at TSC or is there any difference? What is the dosage amount or mix rate and worming schedule, etc. for an average sized beagle? What about for pups, is it safe and if so what age?
Basically, I would like any information about the use of these products. I know they sell pastes as well but have never used it either and would it be a good idea to buy the inkectable and the paste?
I was going to buy the product used for cattle but need to how much to use for a 25 pound dog.
Thanks

Re: Ivermectin
What worms does this kill and does it kill fleas and ticks and does it if so at duration? Does it las as long as Frontline? I mainly am interested if this kills fleas as good as Frontline. I never had a worm problem with my dogs.
Re: Ivermectin
I thought it was just good for heart worms, helped wth mange and skin problems

Re: Ivermectin
My vet told me it only prevents heart worms, does not get rid of intestinal worms or keep fleas off dogs. if you ar needing something to help control fleas and ticks try a little seven dust sprinkled in the dogs bedding but don't over do it. as far as ear mites or other mites read the post on mites there is alot of info there.
Good luck

Re: Ivermectin
Thanks guys. I have read so much about ivermectin that i was beginning to think it cured or prevented everything. Well, preventing heartworms is reason enough to start using this product but I am looking for something to control fleas that works as good as Frontline but at an economical cost...sort of like Ivomec does with heartworms. If not, I will continue to use Frontline. One thing I wil say about Frontline is I buy it from Australia and I buy the large dog dosage and syringe out and divide one pack between several dogs. That makes it a little more economical.
Anyways, thanks for the info gang. As always, this board is very helpful.

Re: Ivermectin
Ed,
Ivermectin may be given either SQ(under skin) or orally. once a month I take a Iams dog biscuit and put the ivomec on it and feed it with their dinner. Only prevents heartworms and mites but, may have an effect on fleas. Probably not though as it only affects something that sucks blood. I have used it for about 15 years now with no adverse side affects. 1/10th CC per 10 lbs is correct for dosage.

Re: Ivermectin
Thanks Leah.
Do most people buy it for cattle or another animal? Looking for the smaller bottle. I seen where TSC sells it for around $35.00 for a 200 cc bottle for cattle, if I remember correctly. Would this be a good choice?

Re: Ivermectin
make sure it is the 1% its foe cattle and swine I believe they make a .27% you want the 1%
1cc per 10 lbs is the doseage my vet told me also The price sounds right but for a 50cc bottle

Re: Ivermectin
Yes, thats it. Ivomec 1% solution. Make sure you do NOT buy the "ivomec plus" I keep mine in my fridge and you should definately keep it out of sunlight. It will last past the expiration date as well. If it turns yellow its no good. Mtneer is right.. 50cc bottle and his link shows what it looks like. Its for cattle. I've used it on puppies as young as 3 weeks for walking dandruff.Pike Ridge Beagles wrote:Thanks Leah.![]()

Re: Ivermectin
Folks may say it want kill fleas , but I belive it will or atleast help , read what it does for cattle , now it's been years since I did but if I remember right it say's prevents lice , ticks , bots and many more things as well as a wide range of intestinal worms. We've used it for yrs. on cattle & I've used it for around 15 to 18 yrs. on dogs with very good results as a heart worm preventive ( was also recomended by my vet ) as a heart wormer. One summer i didn't used it and my dogs were covered with ticks & fleas , went back to it and in those yrs. I've never had another flea problem. From time to time after coming in form a days run'n in the summer I've seen tick or 2 crawling around on the dogs but never found any that inbedded into my dogs. So I can't prove it keeps fleas off my dogs but it's all I use and have no flea problem. I only use it as a hearts worm preventive & use other things for internal worms. I would NOT use it on puppies until atleast 6 monts old. I differ from the dosage other are say's a little ,my vet told me to only use 1/10th cc per dog for what I use it for , I use a insulin syringe as they are marked in 1/10's but don't try using the needle that comes with it , throw it away and use a 18ga. or something bigger, that will allow you to draw it out of the bottle. They now make a gernric brand that here cost around $25.00 for 50cc & 50cc will last you yrs if you doing only 8 to 10 beagles and you keep it dark (in the box it came in) & refrig. My vet did also tell me NOT to use it collie's for some reason they can't take it. Just my thoughts & how I use it.

Re: Ivermectin
I wouldn't wait until a pup is 6 months old to give it heartworm prevention if mosquitoes are present. By that time the worms can be living in the heart and you have got a real problem. 2 months old is when I start unless it is wintertime. Won't hurt the pups at all. 58 days after a bite and you have the L2 molt which Ivo will not kill.
Re: Ivermectin
I dont know if Id say that it works as well as Frontline but something thats a heck of alot cheaper and works pretty good is Bayer Tree & Shrub.I am looking for something to control fleas that works as good as Frontline
I put 2 cc's on their back and it works great.
