I had my 8mo. old male out with two older hounds last weekend. He has been doing quite well and has been circling rabbits on his own for the better part of two months now. Well the two old hounds started a track up on a ridge, as the the pup was on his way to them the old dogs put up a deer(which they ignored), but didn't the darn thing just about run the pup over. We ll he turned and opened on it. From what I could see he was purely sight chasing. It took me a bit to get after him and I fired a shot over his head and hollared. He stopped and returned to me at which point it was quite obvious by his actions he knew he was in the wrong.
My question is how to address this problem or is it a problem yet? Should I hunt him with an e-collar now, should I take him out to spotted deer and shock him, or just watch him closely and hope he's learned?
If he didnt smoke it to the next county I wouldnt worry about it. I would have him wear the collar though; one reason you bought the thing. plus could keep hound from being killed if he chases the deer across a busy highway.
I agree put a shock collar on him and put him on a deer. See what he does, if he takes it shock him. You may get lucky but I would try him a few times before I was comfortable he doesn't want to chase deer. I really wouldn't recomend shooting over his head. This could result in an entirly different broblem that is not so easy to correct
