Just got notified that Vet-Vax will no longer sell Rabies Vaccines due to issues form the state that they operate out of . Any one know of other options as far as where to purches the Rabies Vacc. with certificate and tags? I also Called Thomas veterinary Drug but they will only sell the vacc. with no certificate or tag why I can not understand. Thanks in advance

Re: Rabies Vaccines
Here in Missouri, If a Vet doesn't give the shot and have it on record, and something was to happen to where they would question it, Its just like the dog didn't have the shot.
Several years back we had a rabid skunk come to our place and chase our animals around, i killed it, and had the county check it. it came back positive for rabies. Luckiy being my hounds where put up, and the county guy was very trusting as to what we told him, they didn't question my shots( at that time i gave them my self.) BUt he did tell my if the shot weren't on record at our vet it would be just like the dogs didn't have them. I had to put down a horse, and about 15 chickens. I could of qarentened (spelling) the animals but the cost would of been unreal for a horse, and my kids were very young and i didn't want to risk it, because we knew the skunk bit the horse, and was in the chicken coop. I did have to have a vet come and give shots to the rest of my horses, plus 15 weaning calves, plus a few cows that were in that area.
just some food for thought, giveing the shots your self is still better than no shots....

Re: Rabies Vaccines
Replying to Brian Jones about giving the rabies shot your self is still better than no shot . I totally agree I am lucky that I live in a county (Newago MI ) where it states that the kennel owner or a lic.veterinarian may give the rabies shot . And my local veterinarian doesn't hold it against me when I bring my dogs to his office for emergency service when I tell him /her that I vaccinate for rabies my self IE. (most recently my female ran a stick down the back of her throat while running a rabbit ). I can not understand why there are laws implied by a state against receiving a rabies vac. through some one other than a lic.vetrinarian.I was always taught that rabies was a very bad disease that could be spread very rapidly so why on gods green earth would you discourage a dog owner by restricting him/her from giving there animals the vaccines or by making it illegal to sell rabies vac. in certain states, especially a hunting hound that god only knows what that hound may run in to in this country that seems to think all wild animals have a place in our woods IE. wolves, coyotes and all the other animals dead or alive that may spread the rabies disease.

Darrell,
My dog numbers are up, and with the price of everything. I may go back to giving my own rabies shots if i can buy them. I learned alot about rabies from the county heath inspector. I would say most of the time there wouldn't be a problem. Wish they would let us give them and keep the records...

Re: Rabies Vaccines
Here in Va. we have to have a vet give them or at a "clinic". As soon as the vet gives the shot they send a notice to the county clerk that you own the dog in the county and have to have it liscenced. All a money racket.

Re: Rabies Vaccines
It is the states way of collecting taxes from these animals that arent reported.Hows a dollar shot end up costing 12 dollars when it gets to a licensed vet.It hurt when you pull up with a box full of 15 dogs.We use to give our own also.
My vet called last week wanting to know where each dog was that I had took last year,I told em the chickens eat em!!!LOL

There's your answer.All a money racket
You cant give em yourself in Arkansas either but I can go to the feed store and buy the vaccine in a 10 dose vial.
