I would get that pup on amoxycillin ASAP. An infection like that could easily kill that pup. May be time to see a vet. I'd also be applying some triple antibiotic cream on the sore.

I have to agree... If you aren't going to do anything about it.... don't post pictures here online.... just fuel for the fire... edit your post and remove the picture and i'd suggest the same for everyone else... this post just needs deleted.

Needs to be iodined and stitched closed.
It's been there awhile, notice how the edges are pink and starting to heal.
I'd guess my large animal vet would do it for less than $50.
It looks clean and healthy flesh, just needs closed to heal properly... ;)

I see nothing abusive about this, things happen to our animals and some things we can take care of ourselves and others we need seek advice and help from pro's. This wound looks clean but does need attention from someone who can close it up and that's all there is to it......
Let us know how your puppy gets along... ;)

Don't worry Shannon, she isn't going to be using the pup for iditarod race of field trials.

The wound is already healed around the edges, therefore it is too late to stitch. There is no blood and no sign of infection.
Keep the pup on antibiotics as others have said, and keep the hole sealed with Nu-stock, antibiotic ointment, or even axle grease.

I have had dogs with injuries similar to that. All we ever did was keep putting axle grease into the wound.
(axle grease has sulfur, seals the wound, keeps the skin moist, and should be sterile until exposed to outside contaminants).
As long as it didn't effect the throat/vocal chords the pup should be fine and healthy.

Duece,
This is gross to some and even shocking to others. They have never seen open wounds but this is a very clean wound. As i said, it's healing around the edges already and has been draining it'self by being left open(mama or someone has kept it clean), the only worry is foreign matter getting inside and infection. Long ago mama hound would have kept this licked clean and it would have healed over most likely. Hounds are wonderfully resilient and great self-healers.
Our large animal vet is great to work with and he is reasonable on price and will work with the "payment plan" if needed... ;)
There are alot worst shocking things today, but Hollywood and the media play it up as entertainment...
