cherry eye

i had a 8 week old pup get cherry eye.. never seen one get it that young and only the 2nd dog i ever had get it. got home from work the other day ,, i had previously called vet they said didnt wanna do anything till it was 12 weeks old ... man it looked like it eyeball was coming out or something ,, actually u couldnt see thye eyeball it was so swelled up.i called the vet they let me bring it on in and they fixed it .. now its on antibiotics..never seen cherry eye be so bad it was only showing for 2 days when it did that. the vet even said he never seen one that bad. have yall?

I've only had small cherry eyes that i could put drops on and press back into place...usually after some Visine AR (Allergy relief) drops and pushing it back in a few times (while on clean crate rest) mine stayed put. One of my pups did have it so bad that when he was old enough he needed surgery to tack it back down. He had droopy lower lids so I placed him in a pet home....don't like that bloodhound look on my beagles and certainly it's not good for a field dog, so snip snip.

You can buy antibiotic ointment at http://www.revivalanimalhealth.com to keep on hand and if you get to the eye right away, use drops or the antibiotic ointment and get your hound off the ground and away from any irritants (crate rest) sometimes you can "cure" it without surgery. I have one bitch who has one crop up no and then after hard palying in the dirt or from pollen, etc., but so far I have been able to treat it and show her with no problems from her eye. The key is to catch it and put it back right away.

When you say "they fixed it" I assume you meant surgery right?

I had it happen to a 5 month old pup about 3 weeks ago. It was the first time Id ever had it happen. I took him to the vet that afternoon, he kept him overnight and did surgery the next morning, and I picked him up that afternoon.

He did tell me that it is sometimes genetic and it might happen to his other eye. Ill have to wait and see on that one I guess.

My good ole farm vet fixed 2 for me over the years doesn't even put the dog completely out just slows the dog down some grabs the cherry pulls and snips it out with little surgical sissors bleeds for maybe a minute gives me eye drops and home i go cost me $30

i have cut a few out of the years around here, all u need too do is snip it right ot of there the dog will bleed a lot but it wont hurt him, then they are good as new in a few days

yes they did surgery .. meds and all cost me about 150.he looks alot better now but eye still looks a bit ruff..

Preacher I have never had a case of cherry eye, but I will tell you something I have noticed in the cases I have seen...they have all been patch bred dogs. I'm not tring to mess with you either cause I'm not a patch man myself, but this is just an observation I have made. Has anyone else noticed this trend in patch hounds or is it just by chance that the few cases I've seen have all been patch hounds?

Mine wasnt patch bred.

My vet charged me $90. He didnt prescribe any medicine, just take him home.

I was worried about the eye still being able to make tears but he must have done a good job because everything seems to be working fine.

i know 3 other dogs feiends of mine have had that had cherry eye no tren in patch hounds that i ever seen,,
