Chop mouth or Long bark mouth?
Fellers does a chop mouth dog run a rabbit better than the long bark dog or it does not matter.I read in the rabbit hunter magz in the early 90 that a chop could run a rabbit better so i look at my dogs an others people dogs over the years and I have to agree.Have yall ever notice this.I notice that the chop mouth dog keeps his nose on the groung better.

I like the kind of mouth that sounds like a long train sounding off....

Re: Chop mouth or Long bark mouth?
From what I have seen over the years it matters what mouth is on what type of hound. If you have two faster dogs, a chop mouth will keep his head down and tends to snap back to the point of loss quicker with making for better running VS. a fast dog that lifts his head up to bawl and over runs it to far before he put his head back down not knowing where he last past sent.
Now if you have two slower med. speed hounds it really don't matter much.
May not make much since the way I'm saying it, but it does when I see those type of hounds run!

Re: Chop mouth or Long bark mouth?
The biggest difference as mentioned several times is the bawl mouth dog lifting its head. Some throw it way back but others barely lift it. I would say a weak nose on a fast hound that lifts his head high to bawl would be a bad combination - especially when scenting was poor. However, a bawl mouth dog that can run head-up without over-running is about as good as it gets!
Re: Chop mouth or Long bark mouth?
That chop mouth dog has an advantage over a heads up bawl mouth dog in that every time the head comes up on the bawl mouth dog, it's not getting scent. The chop mouth dog however is getting scent every breath/bark as it's head is right there in the scent. Not saying chop mouth dogs are better though, this is just what I've seen.

Guys,
You might as well be arguing over what corvette is faster; a red one or a black one.
I have seen tons of each type of mouth do it right and do it wrong.

No then we got to see who driven the red one or the black one.I would say the red one because I like red.
Re: Chop mouth or Long bark mouth?
Does not matter to me. I have both and do not have that problem. If they loose the track because of how they bark, its a fault.

I think I know what your saying. My favorite dog has a big bawl mouth like a coondog and is my best dog. He does lose the track from time to time, but he is normally the one to always pick it back up. He is still a good enough dog to keep around. It's all in what you like and can deal with.rabbitearl wrote:No then we got to see who driven the red one or the black one.I would say the red one because I like red.

I know green river its all what we like.I have a friend that hunts with me and we run maybe 12 dogs together and he has a female that will not run in the pack but maybe 15 ft beside them and when that rabbit cuts on her side she always the one that saids Here he is.I just wish I had one that would take care the other side.

Me too. I like them loud and long.Harner's Hounds wrote:I like the kind of mouth that sounds like a long train sounding off....
I like a long bawl, though my current dogs chop.
Some of you have some odd thoughts on nose scenting ability, and mouth. I haven't seen those corelations.
I had a nice male a few years ago. He was a good all around dog and I have been trying to find one like him since.
He had a long "baaaarrrrrooooo" bark. A very good nose, good check work, and good line control. I would like to have that type of line control and speed now (he wasn't a wind splitter, but moved along at a good pace).
I had a nice blue tick male that was killed last year. Long bawl mouth, big nose, lots of speed, and could stretch out and run.
When he had a big running rabbit there were few dogs that could keep up. You could hear his foot steps through the bawl.
It sounded like it was vibrating. He had a lot of characteristics of his sire (Logan Elm Blue Rocky) and the dam's sire (Odells Turnback Joe).
I have a nice chop mouth female now. She lacks a little bit in nose and is rough on the line. She has a ton of hunt. Overall she is very much like her sire but a little smoother like her dam.
Another female I have has decent hunt, but won't go wide. Has a really big nose, methodical check work, and very tight on the line. She has a squalling type chop on track. She has poor running gear so I had her spayed.
Mouth is what it is. I don't think it affects winding, scenting, line control, etc.
I have seen all types of dogs with different noses, different mouths, different line controls, and can't make a correlation.
Re: Chop mouth or Long bark mouth?
A machine gunchop is nice but nothing seems to run as many cold
chills down my spine as that big squall mouth sounding off
.
I was running with my buddies one night just before my blue male
had ever started to open and all of a sudden I heard something
I started screaming because I was pretty sure a coyote had gotten
ahold of our dogs
. I think I figured it out the next time I heard
him open
. His full littermate sister on the other hand has
a chop mouth . I prefer a mouth that is recognizable but I LOVE
that big screaming squal or yodling chop . I too have heard that it
will affect thier speed but haven't seen this to be the case so far .
I'm not sure that a dog with a good nose would need to stick it
directly on the ground and it kinda seems like the one with it's nose
stuck to the ground might run a lil slower vs one with thier head
straight out watching where it's going
, but I couldn't say
for sure either way .

Re: Chop mouth or Long bark mouth?
I have 2 male 9 mos old pups out of the same litter, one is a chop mouth and the other is a bawler lifting his head in the air and letting it rip. their speed is balls to the wall they really push a rabbit, but the bawler keeps right up to the chop mouth dog, not sure if it really affects the speed of them. they are out of Big meadows Kennels LP style dogs.
