Re: Rabbit Traps
Eddy,
You have the right idea, live trap and apples. From what Ive trapped though, if a rabbit can see through the sides and top of the trap. It will not go in, some people may of had luck that way, But I never did. All I did was cut a piece of old trap off, cover the side and top with it. Leave the back open. I always put some stick and grass over it as well. If the rabbit feels more at home , hes way more likely to go in. Just my .02. But I was having the same issue as you until I tried it. It works. Chris

Re: Rabbit Traps
I can.If there one thing that I can do that is catch rabbits. It took me 7 years to learn how.To have 7 rabbits pens you better know how.I used no bait and catch my rabbits in fall and winter.I coming out with a video in nov I will keep in touch and let you know.I will tell you this My box traps are 3 and a half inch wide and 5 inch tall by 24 inch long. That is a box trap and make them ugly with old lumber. But there hard to catch this time of the year easy in fall and winter.I catch over 300 every year with 20 boxes and this is were there not that many rabbits.I donot kill none of the rabbits.

I am catching a few in pyramid traps. RED Apple as the bait and you will catch mostly females and small ones.

Re: Rabbit Traps
I like using the smaller wire trap, easier for the rabbit to threw. I've also caught several in wooden box traps to, but then again, they cant see out the sides.

spoke with a game warden down on the river banks. desribed a situation about building of a pen. he said valid trapping license a plenty of protection from preditors. he said that is smart for small game hunters for the lack of interest in the upper echelon for big game and turkey the money makers

Re: Rabbit Traps
Two things that work for me is leave a food trail outside the trap and put the trap on a rabbit trail in the thick stuff. I used the cheap made wire cage traps sold on ebay and have had good success. I use cut apples and salt.

Re: Rabbit Traps
I do make my own traps but have never had any interest in the traps so I have never made them for no one. I would have to check on what that would cost and get back to you, if your interested e-mail me aseger@(not)hughes.net (remove the not). There is alot of techinique in trapping rabbits, your scent on the traps makes alot of difference and whole lot of other things come into play with this. Strawberry's do work for me but have had better luck with Red Apples.

Re: Rabbit Traps
eddywilliams, Has the trap your using been used to trap other animals in the past? It will be very hard, or at least it will take along time to catch a rabbit it a trap that has other animal scent in it such as coon or possum.

Re: Rabbit Traps
agree, once you've caught a possum, it will take some time before a rabbit will go in your trap. You can speed it up if you burn some leaves or pine straw inside the trap. If you do catch the possum you'd better kill it or it will keep coming back for more apple.
Eddie Zimmerman makes pyrmid traps and ships them out. You can find him on this board. I don't remember his number but it sholdn't be to hard to find.
