Game finders?

Post by Alabama John »

Took a break from hunting and along came a deer hunter and we were visiting when he pulled out a hand held game finder with lights on it. He said it would find a deer, live or dead and he finds them in the
cut over hiding in the bed with it where he would normally walk on by and miss the deer. I jokingly asked if it would find a rabbit and he said it would find a dove lost at a fall dove shoot, so it should find a rabbit.

I tossed a dead one in the weeds and he showed me on the arrow where it was. I laughed, but he then walked around and said there is either a rabbit or some small animal or bird in this clump of vines. I stomped in there and sure nuff, a rabbit ran out. He said it works best the colder the temperature as it detects heat differences. It was about 40 degrees.

Anyone use them for a jump dog? Looks like it would be good for the trials where the gallery jumps a rabbit for the dogs.

Sounds like it really works but i have never used one. The way I look at it if the hound don't have enough hunt to find a rabbit then I don't care where the rabbit is. Takes the fun out of it I think. It might be good for training pups to hunt to find the rabbit and get in the brush after it. I wouldn't care to use it for that. I don't field trial any yet and never have so some of these trialers might think different.

How close would you have to be to a rabbit to be able to find it with the game finder?

I haven't used one personally, but I know of a guy that uses one solely for waterfowl hunting. I know I have lost a few ducks in the marsh grass before. They are used mostly for recovering lost/wounded game. I have a little bitch that finds my bunnies though :D

These are illegal to use for hunting in Indiana, but I bet they would work great locating live rabbits for a pup to chase ;)

i bougt one to help in finding deer , if you dont know how to use it it is worth less dont take me wrong it has helped find one deer that a buddy of mine shot but i truly think it was hand granade luck . i have picked up heat from a oak tree with it and not just once or twice it pics them up alot . now i am not saying that thay dont work i am saying try to read all the directions a few times . i still dont know how to work it all that well .
if any one buys one let me know . thay are all so about $200 if i remember right . if any one wants one let me know i might trade it for a good broke female or male that is about a year to two years old . i whould prefer a bluetic or redtic but will consider any good hound . it dont have to be a trail dog just be able to bring a rabbit around in a full circle . i like a med to fast dog . let me know .
