A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)
So why don't the clubs up north in Canada avertise in Better Beagling? I guess the way I see it if it was advertised more would come from the U.S. I'm sure some of the farther ones would be tough for some but the ones in Ontario would be on guys list. Also then these dogs like Levi, The Man, Sly and dogs like these would get more recongition for thier accomplishments? I'm sure there is alot more to this and I've always wondered why they didn"t advertise.
I judged a few classes one year at Grand River and I can say you guys have some splendid hounds up that way. Alot of them hounds I would be very happy in owning. I was sent some figures on Mt. Man and the numbers were out of this world. Moneysunk Mt. Man was bred to 12 bitches and out of the 12 he had 53 pups placing in trials... Wow!! I don't know how accurate these number are or when they were from but even so if this is even close thats awesome! The Beagles Canada site is one of my favs and I visit it often. Levi has had a tremdous impact on the breeding up that way as well. Hats of to all the dogs and owners in Canada for bettering the breed!
I really liked this...

And that my friend is the rest of the story......I bred to my buddies that have helped me and been there, if pups aint no count it would probaly be my fault as most friends got nice bitches.
Most people bred good to good.It never seemed to work for me.After years of dealing with the public, I dont enjoy talking on the phone to people that never bred to me anyhow.Point being if the pups dont turn out its my fault, my dogs are bred to reproduce i wish more bitches were.Good post.
i would be more than happy to send one of my top bitches up there infact i would love to get ahold of the guy who owns levi or one of the other good studs up there you guys have made some really good points great post infact i will be looking at it in a little different perspective and i did see the beagles for sale too good point again
bushbound i agree with you on the man i have 8 dogs here going back to the man but to add he was bred to some good bitches maybe good isent the right word ifc agnes at least twice ifc screamer at least twice and ifc hoser at least twice

man should be lookin for control first with good foot then he can step up the foot in one right cross speed is the easiest to breed for if one looks for "sheer speed"

I've never met you....but I like the way you think! I think Jimmie will agree with me, as I think I have said the same thing to him about 50'000 times Footspeed is in the eye of the beholder, its the easiest thing in the world to breed for....brains and control, now that is the other end of the spectrum....

The fact that mountain man produced so many fc is utterly amazing. What actually happened to the dog i know he is dead but at what age did he die? His offspring appears to be aiming for the fences himself. Let Er Rip is also producing flashy type hard hitting dogs, with more line control than most have see in the south.I always steered clear of striker blood for the hunt lacked ,so i was told but the natural ability was second to none ...Lynn as well as several others say there young dogs are second to none. Its makes me think that maybe the monk knew something most did not see. Dogs will certainly come and go but there numbers never die. When a dog has been bred 150 times or more i would expect to see at least a hundred good hounds within 2 years at that rate.
Here is my point why not hold back on studs, if you are truly a houndsman money aint everything
I bred with discretion and intent to produce better than i have..Maybe i set my bar to high to jump but i will never sale out due too pressure from the public. Most notable southern studs and bitches were nothern bred . You boys up north built it we southerners just stole the concept with moderate tweaking. Over the last few years i have learned this the canucks and yankees are pretty good fellas to deal with... Just sorta hard to understand. Not many say get er done.
Good post and thanks northern brothers
When the moment of truth arrives, the point of preparation has passed.

i have a male that came from monk. ftch awful bawlin zorro real one that is as good as they come. i breed him to ftch carbonwilli's susie q which is 7 now. from what i hear she was hard to beat in her time.both hounds have great hunt, desire, brains, and speed.susie has lost a step or two because of her age be she is still a great hound.

The man just died in the last year or two. I can't remember when. I think he was about ten. I remember he wasn't too much younger than striker himself.
chapkosbeagles wrote:that is very well said i agree with you but my best dogs parents never hunted they came from hunting ped full of field champions but were never took to the woods so with that said every situation is different what i am wondering is what traits do thows dogs throw i would like to know what is throwing tons of SPEED,NOSE,BRAINS that is what i want to breed to
you may want to check out carroll and dale peters they got a dog named beefhide creek ben,a.k.a buck that can flat out move,9/9 half on foot.he is out of colemans roll on buddy, got buzzsaw on bottom side with northway spur 7times in 5 gen. he's pretty tuff! we have 2 females out of buck x dixie, both owned by the peters, they are 14 months old they have about 8 in speed ,plenty of nose, and are giving my 3 year olds all they want!!!!.... it might be what you are looking for.?....
Mountain Man Died Over 3 years ago now . Yes he did hang himself , i think Monk told me he was 6 or 7 .
The Second Generation is producing nicely with very very few breedings with the exception of Viagra, who is getting breed too alot .
I have noticed as a whole beaglers are a Frugal group not too many guys will breed outside their back yards. Or go outside of driving distance to find the right stud dog
