Re: Breed to a FC or not.
FC's can get beat by another dog on certain days, it's more a matter of consistancy running good. I bet if the FC had 9 or 10, 1st places it would be very obvious.A 10 year old FC may not show like he did at 3 yaers old either, or it may still beat what ya put against it.

"Even considering a title for breeding is ignorant unless you are trying to sell pups and turn a dollar."
man ol man what a statement.
If you ..... or anyone out there is in my position..... then how can you say that a FC does not matter. It is a proven title.... the dog may not fit you ... or you may not like the dog but the dog has still proven it's self. Yes it would be nice to be retired or not have a 6 day a week job and be able to check out every hound I like the sound of but the cold hard fact is ... if the pedigree is what I want and the hound has made champion in some form... then I can ask around for those who have run with the hound and get darn near the same as watching this hound run once or twice. I have had the biggest culls in the world get on a hot streak and look a day or two. In that case ... you heard he was a good hound.. you went and watched and now all you have is smoke and mirrors and wish i woulda coulda....
If that hound was a Champion and 15 friends had seen him run at some point... and they all give close to the same description or close to the same ... the pedigree matches .. then I am in.
fact is we all do the best we can with what we have. Like I said before ... breed what ya want .. feed what ya want... cause in the end... none of that matters. All that matters to most of us (when it comes to beagles) is that when we let them out of the box and after they sniff around for ten minutes .. the music will begin.
I'll take my chances on proven pedigree's and FC anyday of the week untill I retire and can go look at some of these dogs.

Re: Breed to a FC or not.
Well said Bill. I couldn't agree more. I bred to a FC male w/o having seen him run. He was from the same bloodline as my female, I had heard alot of things on the dog. I spoke to the owner as well as the gentleman who was trialing him in another format. They both were extremely helpful. Sure I would have loved to go watch the dog run , but I trusted their judgement. If I could drop money to travel several states to watch a dog run that I "may" want to breed to then I would do it but I can't. I wanted a litter to keep for myself not to try making a dollar from. Who really makes miney on pups anyway after all the shots and wormings and feed and such? Anyway I took a chance.....which is exactly what everyone else does on a 1st cross. I am glad I did and plan to make the cross again. Only problem I encountered is I only got 1 pup. No biggie though cause he has started early and is really showing a ton of potential for a young age. I am glad I chose to use a FC.

"How many of yall would breed to a FC dog and not watch him run over a dog that you like when it run but never been to a trial. Both are akc reg.The dog is Fc in any thing you like.Same question on pups too."
What he said.
Yeah I can read. Just because a dog won a trial judged on someones opinion of what a dog should be, does not make it a great dog and sure doesn't predict its ability as a producer. Check the for sale board. How many of those dogs were the product of breeding pedigrees/champions. Breeding to the hot dog of the month does not on average produce great dogs no matter the number of times FC appears in the pedigree.
How many great horses did Secretariat produce?
How many did Affirmed produce? Both were Triple Crown winners.
Alydar, who came in second to Affirmed in all the triple crown races, produced much better than either of the super horses.

Re: Breed to a FC or not.
I would breed to the one i liked. As far as not seeing a hound run it depends on how many offspring Id seen out of different females. If I see a consistency in offspring from different females and it is what I like then I would breed no problems. Once the trialining is over the producing ability is what counts.

Where would we all be if the people before us would have just settled for a good dog.

I agree with your post too, but you are throwing a component in that I was not considering.mtnwaykennel wrote: man ol man what a statement.

You are asking people you know that are a good judge of a dog their opinion.
I do the same thing. That is generally how I take interest in a dog, is because someone was talking about it. Someone I trust is a good judge and know they like the same style dog that I like.
There are guys I that I trust their judgement. If they recommended me to breed to a male, I would do it sight unseen because I would have heard all about the male and why it would likely be a good cross with my female.
I was considering the question literally as it was asked.
The way question is asked is that you have already found a male that suits you, but would you breed to an FC that you know nothing about. The answer is no.rabbitearl wrote:How many of yall would breed to a FC dog and not watch him run over a dog that you like when it run but never been to a trial. Both are akc reg.The dog is Fc in any thing you like.Same question on pups too.
Breeding to a title without knowing little or nothing about the dog is ignorant.
You and I both know that there are plenty of people doing just that.

Re: Breed to a FC or not.
I'm with ya SilverZuk.... But I know of some FC like the ones you talk about that are not what they should be. I have one here at the house I am wondering about. Last night was the first night he showed me anything.... untill now he has looked like a
!!! May be where he was layed up or something but like you ... if I have friends or people i trust who have seen the hound run .. or i know what the hound has thrown .. I am not as uncertain about it!

It all depends on your goals. Is the goal of the breeding to improve your stock? Is the goal to sell a few pups? Is the goal to obtain a field trial prospect?

Re: Breed to a FC or not.
I would want to cross with a dog that adds to the cross on what the female lacks FC or not. It’s a plus to see pups run out of the dog. Don’t get me wrong it’s hard to get a title, but being a FC does not mean the dog can reproduce its traits.
