from what im reading in a lot of these posts what is being described as a jump dog is a dog that is truely RABBIT WISE. you can dump some dogs out & observe them looking over the area & imediatley head for an area that looks like it will most likely hold a rabbit. i have a bitch i have watched do this several times. this type of hound also knows where a track is going. all boils down to brains.

I am 75 years old and a 3rd generation hounds man. When you talk jump dogs . I start remembering all the dogs I have hunted with in my life time. There is one that jumps into my mind instantly after that comes a group that were good at finding rabbits. But they each had their own style some covered a lot of ground some were very thourgh in their hunting but they found rabbits. But The hound that instantly pops up in my mind was a grade dog called sam. This dog when hunted in a pack of 6 or 8 dogs was the one that jumped 90% of the rabbits killed. Did not cold trail ,was a check dog, If sam opened you got ready to harvest a rabbit. The other dogs opened you waited untel you were sure they had a running track. Now sam lived back a few years when we hunted for the meat. I had a older fellow tell me that if he had owned a dog like sam when he was growing up he would have been a fat man. This to me was a true compliment. At presant I have 8 dogs they will find a rabbit when turned loose but sam`s they or not. good post.

When there is a trial that awards Trophies for dogs that can jump and circle a rabbit in the shortest time, then you will see the return of good jumpdogs. Hard hunting doesn't mean crap.

Hard hunt may not mean crap to you but can not build a jumpdog without it.Iguess i am just the opposite, got too have one hunt, does me good to see a big male corkscrew in a brushpile even if he dont jump a bunny at least i know he tried. Thats all.

WELLS WOODS wrote:Best jump dog I've had was FC Wells' Silver Spring; she would often get left behind while working the hounds at the trials because she would hunt more thorough and stay in the thickets and hunt while the gallery went on ahead; sometimes I would have to go get her, but many times she would jump a rabbit in places all the dogs, horses and gallery had already covered. She died when she was 8, but I still have her blood in my kennel; all my hounds go back to her and they are making good jump dogs also, although they have a lot to learn yet. Spring was hare bred, go figure; grandpup to IFC Trakarab Pacesetter and IFC Branko's Heli-Prop.
Greg you are also right i got a bitch bred similar, finished in 3 trials still lacks points but comes behind everyone else, horses, gallery handlers and judges. And jumps rabbits did it at central and it kinda embarressed me.But after thinking about it.Thats just how she hunts slow and easy.
She is Buddys Iron eagle=Codys sharp star which is t-rex and spur.Ya know something else she is the calmest hound i have raised to date, dogs dont rattle her when they blow up she cleans up.
She is 4 now i love the bitch ran her last night and she did whats she does, owns the pack.

The first midwest field trial I took Belle to serveral months ago, there were 3 dogs and 2 judges walk through a field about 15 yards apart. My bitch was hunting directly behing them. She jumped a rabbit where they had all just walked through. She doesn't cover a lot of ground quickly like many of the dogs I see in trials and even own but she is efficient and rabbit smart. She made the winners pack that day and I was proud of her taking a 6th palce in her first trial. She is my jump dog.

My buddy Pete Tuck owns a jump dog named Ace. He would not just go in any log pile or thicket. He just had a nack for going in the one that had a cottontail in it. I used to borrow him and he would make the rabbit population double where I used to run. He just stayed on the move all the time and as Pete said you rarely ever got to see him jump, but all of a sudden aroo, aroo, aroo he got one up. I remember hunting one day on an old farm and he jumped one that had climbed up a honeysuckle covered fence post. Jumped him standing on his hind legs. He is still living, but has retired to a family members farm and sleeps in the house. I still hear stories about him going out and running till morning at 12 or 13 years old.

Pike Ridge brings something else into the mix. Rabbit smarts. A good jump dog seems to know where to go and just as importantly, where not to waste his or her time. It really does seem that a lot of grade hounds have rabbit smarts where some registered hounds that have big noses, stamina, hunt, and foot, just don't. I'm inclined to agree with Brad that jump dogs are as scarce as hen's teeth and a lot of the reason is that hounds aren't bred very much for rabbit smarts.

Hey Junebug..your right about Lucy..we went last Saturday morning..I think the dogs we had were Lucy, Fred, Ann, Banshee, Chic and Bacon..I think we had 6 runs..nice races it was almost a shame to shoot the rabbits that morning each one ran over 30 minutes of pounding each..sounded like those dogs were drinking those rabbits..its thsoe days that makes it worth it..Lucy jumped 4 I think..next time you are down this way I got a run open ready for her just drop her off  She did some really nice work.

Most jump dogs I've seen won't cover alot of ground but are very thorough (spelling?) and
good brush dogs . Sad thing is that very seldom does a good jump dog get any credit in the
trials . Any dog that spends 5 minutes standing in the road waiting for a rabbit to be jumped
should be DQ'd .

And I do agree this is an excellent post !!! We should read it before we ever think about breeding .

I agree, it always ticks me off to see a dog that spent 50% of the time at a trial hanging around the gallery waiting for a jump or a check to be figured out, it ticks me off worse when you see that dog place :mad2: If the DQ'd lazy dogs I think it would really help the reputation of field trials in general.
