Is anyone aware of any successful training for a young hound that will cold trail, bark before the rabbit is up, on early morning frost covered surfaces or snow? I grew up with hounds most of my life. My Dad, who has since past, use to say, if a hound cold trails or back trails, get rid of it. I own a 16 month old female that packs with medium fast speed, good line control, consistently is improving check work from inside out, exhibits good hunt and handles very well. My female will normally produce the rabbit but occassionally does not. In any event, my other hounds will check her out and move on but she holds me up waiting on her because her cold trailing speed is much slower. I understand some young hounds mature out of cold trailing. This female would do terrific in the south with no frost or snow but I live in the north. She is a worthly hound that I want to keep. Do you have any successful training suggestions?

Re: YOUNG COLD TRAILING HOUND
i cant see shockin a dog when it cold trails,it will relate rabbit scent with shocking, best thing to do is just keep runnin the hound more and more, drive around and turn him loose on a few hot rabbiuts, reward him for it,when he cold trails, tone him and tell him bad dog,and no,sooner or later he will figure it out, main thing is run run run,let the dog figure it out,if it dont, well, deal with it or get rid of the dog,,,,,

I have a 17 month old hound that will do that sometime and when the other dogs check him and then leave him like you said they do yours, I do like Danny said and tone him and bring him on.

Re: YOUNG COLD TRAILING HOUND
I took my young female out this morning with 2 other hounds. She jumped all 4 rabbits we ran in 2 1/2 hrs with one minor cold trail episode. I moved her on with tonning and encouragement as Danny and Ky Hunter recommended which seemed to work. My other 2 hounds will jump their own rabbits when soloed but this young female seems to be the hound that jumps mr. rabbit first. We had rain iced over snow conditions this morning with the temp in the low 20's yet my hounds had 4 solid runs. Thanks to Danny and Ky Hunter for the recommendations. Eddie and Justin, this female is a keeper.

nothing better than a big nose! I think you are doing the right thing. Just take your time and you will be happy with the results.B&D Kennels wrote:I took my young female out this morning with 2 other hounds.
