you r correct...i have seen alot of fast and retarded dogs in my life..brains have got to steer them the right way or ya aint got nothing
Yeah but also you better have a good check dog to lead the way. If you got a slow hound, but excellent check dog, 9x out of 10 he will catch the rabbit more than a fast hound that isn't a good check dog.

If you think that all it takes is speed to catch rabbits you are sadly mistaken. I had a female that caught plenty of rabbits and was medium/fast, tops. In the words of the legend Henry Moore, "You are a complete neophyte." Look it up.

I agree, speed is great, but give me a dog that can keep constant pressure on a rabbit. I've seen several dogs that are about a consistent 7-8 in speed, run rabbits down by keeping the pressure to the rabbit. I've seen several rabbits get ran down in the coal mines in Indiana in 30 minutes or less, they just simply lock up. That's my kind of dog!

i agree with jamie. it takes brains for a dog to run a rabbit, and yes even the slow dogs can catch rabbits too. that is, when they run them into a tree. when i mean speed i mean sight race to closing the gap and snatching the rabbit right up off the ground that is after running it, checking it, and than catchin it as soon as he get first sight of it. MOST THE RABBIT THAT I HAVE SEEN GET COUGHT ARE COMMING OUT OF A CHECK AFTER SITTING TIGHT. SIGHT RACE TO SNACHING IT UP OFF THE GROUND,AND BELIEVE ME I HAVE SEEN IT ALOT
I just about witnessed a big ole rabbit get ran down yesterday by Randy Hick's Junior dog and my dog Blue. They were in 5 feet of getting it before it ran back in a thicket. It was pretty exciting. The scent yesterday was wonderful.
I personally like a medium fast speed hound. Fast hounds are fun to watch but a nice steady line control medium fast speed dog with brains and gears is a joy to watch work a track and do it correctly.
