What is a 'check dog'? and what do they do?

A dog good at finding a loss and continuing the track in the right direction. A dog that accurately looks after a
breakdown in a race. Some dogs are better at it than others. Hope this helps.

A good check dog will make a pack really strong and will increase more track recoveries and your hounds might even catch a rabbit or do. It keeps a lot more pressure on the rabbit.

thanks guys, always wondered what they were. guess mines gotta be my lil grade blue beagle, Lucky, hes certainly one of my best. but im getting two more that might beat him, idk yet

The dog that comes out of the dog box not thinking about hunting, but, runs to all others dogs smelling everyone's butt holes to see what they had for breakfast with his hair all raised and stiff legged is what we call a check dog.

Checking to see who ate his sausage.

Usually doesn't stay around here too long. Always is a male. never seen a female check dog.

it's the second most important dog next to the jump dog. can't have a check without a jump first.

A good check dog is the second best dog in the kennel. The first is a great check dog.
U can jump them all day if u dont have a dog to pick up the checks how in the hell would we hear the sweet music of god for hours
at a time.
Theres nothing like Total dead silence and in a instance total mayhem when that check dog explodes out. With a pack of loud, noisy, crazy,badass sob's following.

i do too, but i think all of mine are pretty good. just one that's getting there, but hes gonna be one hellacious rabbit hound hes got a mouth on him like you wouldn't believe!

Amen to that. Some of the speed demons are check dogs. Good at creating a check!! Don't get me wrong, I like fast and
accurate, thats a lot of fun. Just seems real hard to control when top speed is mach 2!

I have got one now that is worth his weight in gold. Like Toby said total silence then boom the old boy figured it out and there they go. He can sniff all the butts he wants here !
