med for Lyme Disease
I am having a problem with my local vet and need help if possible. I have 2 dogs that contracted Lyme disease on a hunting trip in northern Wisconsin. I took them to the vet and received a prescription for Metacam which is for pain and inflammation and Doxycycline for the virus. Things were going great both dogs start to get better then all of a sudden they are back to the original condition. Back to the vet, for another round of meds. He tells me this will be a long-term antibiotic regimen and the dogs will most likely show the symptoms through out their life, I am ok with doing what ever it takes to make the dogs healthy. My problem is he is charging me $1.40 a pill for the Doxycycline and I can buy it on the internet from a animal supply house for $0.17 each, I don’t mind him making a living but does he need to make it all from me. Is there a vet on the message board that can help me with a prescription or does anybody know of another solution

Have you discussed this with your vet? Just because he's charging you 1.40 now does not mean he won't give you a prescription to deal with another supplier. I'm in the same boat with a thyriod condition with one of my dogs, 30.00 a month for meds from the vet or 20.00 for a 6 month supply from Lambert Vet Supply, after a few months I just told him I would rather save the money on meds for the next dog that would need his service and he has worked with the supplier without a problem since. I think the vets set thier prices knowing most of the time it will be for just a few days the meds will be needed and the client will pay for the convienance of geting it from them. Talk to him if you have'nt and don't think he's doing you a favor, your future and past buisness is worth more than a couple extra bucks on pills. One other thing, a friend of mine gets meds for her dog with a presription at Walmart. Maybe that would be an option as well.

Bummer, I think I would start looking for another vet. Here's another route, I don't know much about this particular product but I do buy amoxicillin from these guys with great results and I assume this would be simular. http://www.lambertvetsupply.com/Bird-Bi ... 01TLBIO100

I would get another vet ASAP, it sounds like he is in it for the money.

Northern WI, that's weird, I didn't think there were many ticks up there. Guess we're only there when it's super cold so we don't see any. I have 2 that have come down w/ Lymes in the last couple years. Doxycycline is the #1 antibiotic treatment for animals as well as humans. I have 2 friends that are on it, was shocked when they told me.
Anways, Amoxicillin is a very good antibiotic also. Both of my dogs were on a 30 day dose period and have been fine since. I gave both of mine Rimadyl (prescription) for about 2 weeks also for the soreness & joints. Hope this helps.

Did a little research on the bird-biotic (doxycline) link I posted earlier and it is in fact used to treat Lymes as well as alot of other ailments. The author was actually so impressed with it he recomends using it as a preventive once a year.
