Been trying to start a couple pups, the baby rabbits haven't helped. Ran an old bitch with them and her nose and upper lip are raw. Left another bitch run loose with them last night and today her eyes are matted shut. Oh! did I mention, the ticks are terrible!
The most barking they've done was when they found a snake and decided to make sport of it.

I finally had a break in the heat this past weekend and ran Sunday...

as Patch stated, the babies created a problem, not quite big enough to leave a good scent... but just enough to get
the dogs rabbity.
We did finally hit a buck that took them clear accros a cow pasture and back... about 45 min race, but the hounds
are certainly out of shape... had only one additional acceptable race after that and they were ready for the truck.

but 2.5 hours is better than nothing.

Been pretty good for me. I have been running about three days a week. I don't run too long;maybe two races a trip.

We ran 2 groups a total of 6 1/2 hours this morning.

The first group was 5 young dogs (1 1/2 - 2 years old) and an older easy going check dog. It was 57 degrees with a good dew when we turned loose. They ran 3 hours pretty solid. They had one 10 minute span after 2 hours without a rabbit, but they jumped one that ran until we caught them.

The second pack was 5 older dogs (2 - 5 years old) that are getting ready to compete. They ran 3 1/2 hours. For the first two hours they ran pretty hard. They holed a rabbit and went for a swim in a beaver pond. I caught Jed, and turned Neal loose and they ran 3 different rabbits the last hour and twenty minutes. The longest break was about 10 minutes when they hit the water and I switched dogs. We quit at 12:40 with the temperature at 83 degrees.

I love to run in the summer! As long as you have 1. big areas 2. a lot of water, and 3. dogs that are in shape, you can have good chases. But, you must have all three if you want good running.

this morning was the first of the summer for me. started at 7:30 it was about 55 degrees. 20 seconds unhooked hondo jumped it then the music was great for about 20 minutes. my buddies pup even was opening and running with the pack. they holed that one up and then the young dogs kept messing with the young ones. finally my buddy got sick of the little ones messing the young dogs up and the mosquitos were horrible. we called it quits about 2 hours in. i shoulda stayed and did some solo work :( oh well there is always tomorrow morning. the heat doesnt bother me too much. i think as long as you work your dog up to it and get them conditioned and acclimated good they should be able to run in 85 degree weather with no problems. just keep an eye on them and make sure there is some water holes nearby.

later, dave

My Good Friend from WV. came up Last Friday Night, and we had a lot of Rabbits and quiet a few long runs. The Dogs slept very well that Night. The Running in SW. Pa. has been Great so far. There hasn't been very many Hot days here. Good Luck.

Open running just started this morning here in Michigan. I met a friend at 6:00am, weather was in the high 50's. We dropped 4 adult dogs and two derby dogs, running was excellent until about 10:00am, after that all they could find was a bunch of little ones. My dogs eyes and noses took a beating, but they sure seemed to enjoy themselves.
