What to do with over 15 inches

Post by Dave Swiger »

I have a young male, Branko/Turbo bred, that can flat out jump and run rabbits all day long. Best male I have ever had. This dog would champion out in UKC with no problem, I don't know about AKC, because I have never been to one. Problem is he is over 15. My question is Anybody have any luck breeding an over size and getting 15 and under? Truth be known, over size is still found because these dogs are still being bred and not culled for breeding. Tell me your experiences.

By the way...he is not leaving..I'm a rabbit hunter first.

Sell him to a gunner that would love to have a 16" dog that can smoke a rabbit

As far as breeding to an oversize, I've seen a lot of oversize Brankos I think they just sell off those that go over.

i heard pimetime was over and im still seeing that most of his grand pups are still over
i think its hard to get rid of that size through breeding atleast in a couple generations
im always afraid of having a good dog that i really like and it being over thats why i dont mess with the primetime line
because ive seen a ton of great dogs out of that blood and most are over
im sure if ya bred him to a small female that you would at least maybe get one that would stay under

I would think it has alot to do with the female you breed to. Most of my stuff is off primetime or grandpups to him and i can't get one to go 15in. :( :(

You can always run him in ARHA Big Pack. BP allows hounds up to 16". Our beagle club, the Oak Hill Beagle Club in Jackson, Ohio is holding a few hunts (August 22 & 23), just to give the guys with big, strong hounds a place to compete. Plus the hunts are a great time.

There are also BP hunts in KY, TN, LA, and SC. At least this would give you a place where you could compete and compare him to other good hounds.

I own a son out of Primetime that's not over 14 1/2 . He's a little pack, and progressive pack rabbit champion.

If you didn't have strict standards a beagle would be the same size as a walker over time. 15" rule is preventing people from breeding beagles that look like a quarterhorse over time. Whenever you loosen the standards then somebody else will feel that next standard is too tight and they'll want it changed. I think it's a good rule personally.

If he is that good, I would hold on to him. Select a small female that has a pedigree of 13 inch dogs when you decide to use him at stud.

He's not going anywhere. He is a gundog deluxe. When he barks you can cock the gun, the rabbit is up and coming to you or hole. That is the hard part. Trials are not my top priority, but he is the type of dog that you would like to have a pup out of.

Like Jim said run him in Big Pack......sounds like hes made for it. There holding that trial next month and believe me the Jackson Ohio Club has lots of rabbits. The hounds caught 10 at the last fun hunt a few weeks ago. Its going to be a great time, lots of running. May as well if your going to keep him, especially if you want to compete him.

If you werent keeping him its a great place to sell a nice big fast hound over 15.

Have a over 15" Primetime male. Have breed him 3 times and so far have got both 13" and 15" dogs. First litter did not even get a 15". Have a blue tick female that is Meachum and Cassidy breed last litter she had one to go over 16". Have 5 pups out of her and the Primetime male 7 weeks old none look like they are going to be big dogs. Have a 9 1/2 month old female out of FC Branko's Freejack and Big Rock Hollow Paleface {palefaqce is Primetime breed]going to be lucky to be over 14". If I have to give up the super hunt I get out of my dogs to get less size just as soon have them all over sized.
send me pedigrees
