How do you break a dog from hunting wide?

Post by Goduece »

I just got a 4yo male that hunts really wide. Turn him out and not telling where he will open up. Any way to break this? Open to suggestions.

I use an Ecollar to control that. Once they know what the tone is all about, they learn quickly. To keep tabs of where he is at all times, you might want to put a bell on him.

I got the dog as a puppy trainer part of a package deal lol. You basically have to hunt with him. He has been 100yds or so from me when he opened. I am used to hunting with guys who's dogs work close, usually insight till they jump.

Gun hunting is the easiest way I have found to real one in. The collar will work if you use it right, but your probably going to take some hunt out of him for a while. If he would stay within 100 yds. and jumped enough rabbits I wouldn't care much.

Oh yell I would do something with him.To me, now you may be different but I like my dogs to hunt with me.And 100 yds is to far for me too.Now that is me.But I am different than alot.I like my dog with me until they jump one.I just like to see a bed jump rabbit a good jump dog than hearing them running one.I told you I was different.I used to have and outstanding bed jump dog.I sure do miss that. But anyway it up to you. What ever you like.I agree with everybody. It might work or it might not.Might make things worst.Dogs are funning about things.

Maybe once i've had him a while it won't bother me as much. Not knowing the dog, and not being able to watch him hunt always creates doubt when he opens. So far have he's only ran rabbits. Would prefer he hunt close, but not ready to cull him yet.

you cant when he is 4 years old unless you put a rope on him and keep it tied to your waist but then when you untie to let him run he will start hunting wide again  they are hard to break when they get this old and a wide hunting dog can and normally will run trash and be hard to get back in also he will pull your other dogs to him causing them to be wide hunters my oppinion -cull.

Your dog for sale?

When I hunt hare that is exactly what I want my dogs to do :D I hate when they are within 30 yards of me, GET OUT THERE AND FIND A LINE!!!!!! I GOT THIS AREA COVERED :hammer:

Hare are totally different creatures. They run well before the dogs or hunter gets within sight, so your dogs are searching for a hot line more so than a bedded one. I might see 1 out of 25 hares "jump," most are long gone before we get close. I constantly holler "Get the bunnies!" as I walk down the trail just so the dogs can keep tabs on me (and I have them on the gps). We hunt together, but I like space while running hare.

Cottontails are a lot different, they occupy the more open farm country w/brushpiles and fencerows, then I like keeping my dogs close and send them into individual pockets of cover. As you know cottons often need to be physically kicked out of cover to run, so if the dogs are 80 yards away from a brushpile they aren't doing you any good.

I hope he works out for you. Sounds like he is trash broke, that helps a lot.

Good luck hunting!!

I agree with what hounddog said and it also help when you are in the wood with him alot of hounds get like that from running in the starting pens and people just letting them out the box and sitting on the tailgate and listening to the music but a few times in the woods with him and the ecollar will help I bought a female about 4mths ago (and she is 3yrs old )that would do the same thing but now she will hunt close along with other hounds

I have to disagree with you blckck-dog if you are in the woods with a hound and they know you are out there walking along and not just standing on the road or where every a clear spot is a hound can be broke you just have to work with him by calling him in when they go out to far everytime you go out and if they don't come that is what the ecollar is for but they can be broke from hunting wide you just have to be willing to put in the time to do it .

 If they don't hunt wide up here that is a good reason to cull them , it means they don't have hunt
