Hartz has gotten some bad press about their "spot on" flea products but I have never heard any problem with their pup wormer. I normally use RFD, Lassie, Hartz, or whatever is available and always thought puppy wormers were all about the same. The only thing I have noticed was that some are double strength but even a double dose should not be fatal. I think you have already figured the problem out. They were likely really wormy and got impacted with dead worms. I sometimes get distracted myself but I would highly recommend that you start worming at 2 weeks old on future litters. Beagles are extremely vunerable to worms and you need to break the cycle as soon as the pups can handle the wormer. I do 2,3,4, 6, 8, and if the pups are doing well, begin low doses of Ivomec at 10 weeks. Best wishes with the rest of your litter!

That is odd. Pyrantel is typically considered to be one of the safest wormers possible. Up to 20x the recommended dose can be given (typically) before ill effects are seen.

I believe the mother probably just laid on her. It is possible there was some kind of anaphylactic reaction, but mama laying on the pup seems more probable.

Sorry that happened

I find it hard to believe a pup 4 weeks old would die from the dam laying on it. This will happen with new born pups, but never with a 4 week old, IMO. More than likely, it was worms that killed your pups.

yes as me and Chuck in the above post said it was worms. the 2nd one lost was not with mother , no way she laid on one. had to be infested with worms and after worming it killed too many for the pup to pass.

I think 4 week is to long to wate, I start at 2 weeks and worm at 3,4,6,8,10 weeks old and never have a proublem.

Worming pups isn't something a person should "hear" about, it is something people should take the time to read about and from several sources. Many online (and bookstore) sources are outdated.

In all actually, most up-to-date sources state worming pups properly should begin before they're born ... by worming the mama several times, from when she comes in heat, through gestation, and right after delivery. And yes, the first worming of pups (after birth) should begin at 2 weeks, and continue every two weeks thereafter.

1 single roundworm can lay 100,000 eggs per day. Hundreds of roundworm lay millions of eggs per day. Anyone who is lax on their worming will soon have bloated, wormy (and sometimes dead) pups by 6-8 weeks, especially if they raise them on dirt rather than an above-ground pen. I know many breeders who not only worm with this kind of a schedule, but who also preventatively treat for coccidia along with it, due to its prevalence also.

black book you are correct, i remember when growing up we wormed at 6 wks. but today is different and harder to raise them. pups that died above were due to late worming at near 4wks old. pups started to die after wormed due to dead worms they couldnt pass.
Visible sign and symptoms = pups legs get real stiff and shake all over as if they cant walk. these spells will last several minutes. vet said the rest will be ok and some mineral oil would help.
also were whelped in above ground kennel and mother wormed before and after pups were born.
