Shot a nice buck, anything I can do to break dogs
Hey guys I started the thread a lil while back about dogs chasing deer. I got alot of responses and I appreciate it. I'm gonna be getting some E-collars as soon as I can afford them. Until then the dogs are not coming out with me.
So opening day on Monday I shot an 8 point. I'll post pics if anyone wants to see em.
I'm wondering if there is anything I can do with this deer scent to get my dogs to HATE it and never trail it again.
I wish I had the collars now, I'd zap em if they tried to go near it. But I just don't have the funds so I can't do that unless I can borrow one from one of my buddies.
All advice welcome here. Thanks

let's see the pics. when it comes to deer chases the e- collar is your best friend.

Buy an electric fence system, hang the wire just in reach of the dogs where they can reach the end of the wire. Cut the scent gland off the buck's hind leg and attach it to the end of the wire.
The shock of the wire should give them the message to leave deer alone.
I have never done this myself, but, I believe John Wick wrote this concerning breaking young coon hounds off deer. Might work. I use a training collar on my dogs, but this would be a cheap way to discourage them.

I used the electric fence method years ago with my coonhounds. It worked with one and temporarily stopped the other hound. Once i got an e-collar the solution was more permanent. Goes to show that your hounds will respond differently. I had to run one beagle down and correct him manually as I didnt have enough collars! He has not ran a deer in two years! Got lucky on that one!

a lot of old timers would take a deer hide , carcass, etc and put it in a barrel then put the deer chaser in the barrel with the carcass and roll it down a nice sized hill a couple times, I have never tried it but have heard that before e collars it was a proven method. I am not advocating that you do it just relaying information and I have heard from a number of people it does work. Good luck, I have had good success with e collars but understand the financial issue, maybe a buddy could lend you some? It usually doesnt take more than a couple zaps on six to make em figure out the error of their ways. good luck

I second Team Fudd's post, but with some twists. 1. Dog has shocking collar on in the barrel...thinks the deer is eating him alive. 2. Dog has a cinder block with him in the barrel...not sure I would try this one, but heard it works.

I have tried this method on foxhounds years ago and never had any luck with it. One thing for sure though is you couldn't get those dogs to go in a barrel again!team fudd wrote:a lot of old timers would take a deer hide , carcass, etc and put it in a barrel then put the deer chaser in the barrel with the carcass and roll it down a nice sized hill a couple times, I have never tried it but have heard that before e collars it was a proven method. A guy nearby where I live orders deer breaking scent and soaks a cloth with it takes the heating element out of a dryer and throws the dog and the deer scented cloth in with it. Sounds cruel to me and I wouldnt do it to my dogs but I've never seen his dogs run deer.
Take your kids huntin and you wont have to hunt for your kids.

Both Ideas above sound like a good way to injure a hound, do it the right way get e collars. or learn to run real fast with a switch .

i have used the barrel method with great success, i put the back legs in the barrel with them and shock them as its going down the hill, also i take deeer scent and have a barrel tied up in the tree , straight up with hole at top, put dog in barrel and twist up and let it go , it spins back down at a rapid speed,i pour deer scent on them and shock them if you can, i do this until they vomit and pooop on them selves , it works , i have success with both methods, on a stubborn dog do both.....scott

Try Just putting the dog on a deer and using the e collar. Does the trick with out making the dog pooop and vomit on his or her self.beaglecrazy-scott wrote:i have used the barrel method with great success, i put the back legs in the barrel with them and shock them as its going down the hill, also i take deeer scent and have a barrel tied up in the tree , straight up with hole at top, put dog in barrel and twist up and let it go , it spins back down at a rapid speed,i pour deer scent on them and shock them if you can, i do this until they vomit and pooop on them selves , it works , i have success with both methods, on a stubborn dog do both.....scott

And another guy said put a cinder block in with the dog. were in the HELLL do yall come up with this stuff.
It prolly did the trick in the old days but comeon man we got a little better technology these days to help us out to correct the dogs.

if someone dont have or afford an ecollar how would you do it , lets hear your dumbass way, or you would probably pay someone to do it for you right? , and i dont agrre with the block thing , nothing to hurt the dogs , but i bet when im done they will be trash broke ....scott
Re: Shot a nice buck, anything I can do to break dogs
I've used the barrel method and it works. I have used the shock method and I don't think it works any better. I've had dogs sh!t themselves and pee by using a shock collar so Toby you're just not turning yours up enough!!! In fact I want them to be scared enough to pee so they won't do it again!

Re: Shot a nice buck, anything I can do to break dogs
heres one that an oldtimer told me last year and swears it to be the best method start doing this before they screw up in there dog house in a corner mount a coffee can with a deer holve or deer gland off of back leg in it,I would guess that a rag soaked in deer breaking scent would work also. his expanation was that if they live with the scent everyday when they come across it in the feild they would have no reaction
Re: Shot a nice buck, anything I can do to break dogs
U said to shock them if u can...So i figure u had a e collar. My method is alot easier and prolly more effective. I like to put them on standing deer, Let the dog get really hot and heavy on it then i hit them with the e collar. Number 6 usually does the trick. I dont pay anyone to do nothing for me when it comes to beagles. I def wouldnt pay someone to put my dog in a barrel with a dear carcass, spinning like a darn! roller coaster with a ecollor on shocking the crap and pee out of them.beaglecrazy-scott wrote:if someone dont have or afford an ecollar how would you do it , lets hear your dumbass way, or you would probably pay someone to do it for you right? , and i dont agrre with the block thing , nothing to hurt the dogs , but i bet when im done they will be trash broke ....scott
