Re: Pride Feed
Thanks for all the replys. I was feeding Diamond chicken and rice and liked it through the summer, but with the cold weather moving in here in Michigan I almost doubled what I was feeding and the stool got really soft. A guy I run with gets the pride a pallet at a time and so I bought two bags from him a week ago. I have already cut back on what I was feeding of the Diamond and the dogs look much better. I think the extra fat was what I was looking for. Where are you Michigan boys getting it at I would like to try something with 20% fat for the winter. Thanks again!

Re: Pride Feed
Ohlinger, you must have got a couple of bad batches or something because the feed is pretty darned good. Glad to hear what you're using now is working out for you but no need to "bash" the pride food.........it's good stuff. There are lots of feeds out there and I'd be hard pressed to have anyone call it the worst.

No it's different. It's just Pride. Man I wish I could find it for $16 a bag, I'm paying $23. I really like it.

Re: Pride Feed
Yeah, Casey like Mapes said it is just Pride. It is made by the Hyland company in Ashland, KY. I am taking a trip up to the U.P. this weekend to run the big circles so after a weekend of putting some high miles on I should get a better feel for the feed. Man I am pumped up for this trip, hopefully I will have some good pics to post next week.

Man i'm just trying to tell him what i thought about it....I'm feeding a raw diet now. I've fed lots of different foods in the past 10 years. Pride or sportmix was NOT anywhere near the top. Bashing or just being honest see it how ya want. Dogs will eat it yes, is it the best for them no. Never fed the chicken and rice that may have been a bit better, white bag and black bag gets a thumbs down. For the price range i thought there was better out there. I had lots of problems on pride especialy. Tooth problems to diarhea, inconsistent stool, dogs did'nt have the go get'm run out of steam after about 4-5 hours of hunting. If you like it feed it i'm just putting the dark side out there i guess. Please don't let my opinion hurt youre feelings b/c i dont like the dog food you like. I fed much better food for 20 bucks a bag though.

Re: Pride Feed
I sense the condescending tone about hurting my feelings and believe me I'm not quite that sensitive and you're opinion isn't quite that important to me, we don't know each other well enough for any of that. I have no emotional attachment to the food but when you say it's the worst you could feed for the money that's just misleading and you're throwing it on the same level as something like Ol Roy and that's just not the case. I guess you're right because that is your opinion from your own personal experience but it's just not the case as a whole. That's why I asked if it was possible that you just got a bad batch or something. How long did you feed the Pride? I got a bad batch of High Standard once and then it seemed to be ok the next time around and the next time it was crap again so I switched to Pride. Things like that happen so I was just curious.

Re: Pride Feed
Lol condescending tone i apologise for my condescending text tone.
Actualy Ol Roy Lamb Rice is something I fed to get away from pride and was much happier with that. I fed pride for 18 months. I did'nt realise how much i did'nt like it until i swtiched off of it and saw how much better my dogs were doing on a couple other feeds. I fed Sportmix they dropped it I picked up feeding Crystal dogs looked wayyyy bettter were doing great, Crystal got dropped from my supplier so i picked up pride and they went backwards to where they were when i was feeding sportmix. I dropped the Pride food and fed Ol Roy Lamb Rice till i found something else to feed steady and started feeding Diamond Hi Engery 24.00 a bag after i moved, and dogs did well on that consistent stool, did'nt take much feed to keep weight on them, coats looked good but i supplement with 1000mg fish oil pill everyday, I did that with pride too just was'nt using as quality of a food then. I think maybe i have been paying alot more attention to food sources and health of my dogs then i did a few years ago after I had some health issues come along and my vet told me start with a better food source. First b/c of the tooth problems, then b/c of skin problems. Now I'm not bashing it I'm just tellin ya it ain't the best dog food and anyone who tells ya it is has'nt tried anything better yet. I listened to a few guys who told me it was one of the best feeds out there, and it was'nt. So maybe i'm doing someone a favor or at least giving a fair a nod in the negative direction for someone to watch closely and make there own decision. I never thought twice b/c everyone told me how great it was. Ol Roy Lamb Rice is'nt a bad choice though. Ol Roy ain't no worse then pride i can garauntee you that. Ol Roy is made at some of the same places as Purina all they do is switch up the formula a touch here and there. I know I used to work in a Purina Dog food plant. We made Ol Roy as well as a couple other off brands just as we did Purina.

Re: Pride Feed
And maybe I need to take a closer look too but it's hard to right now when the dogs seem to be doing pretty good on it. I've always wondered, what do you think makes some dogs do better than others on the different foods? I know some of it is how much you do or don't run your dogs and some of it is how much you do or don't pay attention to the little things in your dogs so you wouldn't notice anyway. But I really do think some dogs do better on one food and another dog may do better on a little different food.........I would like to think what they need is just what they need with the exception of maybe specific health issues but it never seems to be a one size fits all situation. And I don't think being a voice on the other side is a bad thing I just think it's an over generalization of the Pride brand. You talk about Ol Roy..........go to walmart and buy the cheap bag and see what your opinion is on that.........mine wasn't so good and I wasn't real impressed with the Lamb and Rice version either so maybe I over generalize about them too because I haven't tried every version they make. I just think it's kind of a slap in the face to the guys that do try to take care of their dogs when you are basically saying they'll stay alive on Pride but if you really care about your dogs there is way better out there............that part I do take personal offense to.
Like I said you can't hurt my feelings by talking about a dog food and when you said that I just assumed you were being condescending so if you weren't then my mistake. And you're right, there are opinions to be had on both sides even if your side is wrong!!! Just kidding
..............I'll try to lighten up a little bit now........the days gotta get better at some point.
I was serious about the question as to why dogs do better on different foods than other dogs.........what do you think?

here is the ingredients website..dogs do not digest corn there digestive system is'nt designed for it...that is the biggest reason i switched to raw diet it's hard to find dog food that does'nt use corn and a primary ingredient.
I think it that it depends on the living environment and excercise time as to why some dogs do better on different foods. Well insulated boxes weather etc....obviously if your'e dogs are going to be cold you will want more fat content in the dogs, more protein for alot of excersice etc...lots of factors. You have to play around with different foods to really to see what does what, as well as an understanding of possibilities going on with you're dogs. . One easy way to take note of the dogs conditions on certain foods is to look at how much they shed if they are shedding alot they are propably lacking something from there certain food at that time. If they shed little they are doing pretty well. Stools, body weight & composition etc...obviously physcial excercise as well. If you're serious about feeding you're dogs well, and interested in looking around i posted a few links I visit pretty often to do my own homework hope this helps some one with questions. I've looked around alot b/c different people claim different things. I've fed lots of different foods as well with varied results.

Re: Pride Feed
Well guys, I've fed Black Gold, Purina Chicken and Rice, Pedigree, High standard, Ultra, Diamond, and a couple of cheapies over the past few years, and Pride has worked the best for me. Black Gold was good but my dogs seemed to get hot spots in the summer with it.

Re: Pride Feed
also try googling info on dogs digesting corn. You will get alot of both sides pro-corn and anti-corn in dog foods. Ground corn or not i don't believe a dog would eat it in the wild so why put it dog food except as a filler? Thats my question.

Re: Pride Feed
Yeah but you don't see dogs eat some of the other crap they put in there either. I agree with the corn being just a filler and I don't like to see a lot of it in the food. Maybe some more research for me??? Now you've got my wheels turning.
