I think in areas where there are a lot of deer the rabbits are safer around coyotes. To catch a rabbit a coyote has to put out a lot of energy for a tiny snack but when they can kill a deer they are good for a couple days so in areas that the deer are plentiful I think they concentrate their efforts on the deer.

i think the hawks coming back has devastated the rabbit population as much as anything. they just eat the heart and liver i think and grab another one. was in S. Indy a few weeks ago and they were hanging about 10 ft off the ground looked like someone was flying a kite and dive bombing down into the brush.

coyotes main course is field mice from what i have read. they definately can catch a rabbit. i think they have a nose 10 times more powerful than a bloodhound.
