Beagling

Post by Dogman »

Just wandering how long you been doing this ?, who got you started ?, and could you walk away from the sport of beagling or are you addicted for life. I myself have been at it for 20 + years, used to feed my Grandfathers dogs on the weekend and I guess that started my interest in beagles. The answer to the last part I'am addicted and could not stop.

I,ve had beagles for about 32 years.when I was at home we usually only had one at a time.but we would let them run loose all day,and bring them in at night.i had some of the best solo running I have ever seen back then.about ten years ago I started building a pack, and havn`t looked back.

I was out squirrel hurting on the side of a hill one day and saw a neighbor and his son rabbit hunting with their dogs. I probably sat there for about 2 hours watching those 2 beagles work and run those rabbits. It just seem to me like alot of fun. Come spring their female had a litter of pups and I just had to give it a try. So I got my first 2 beagle pups. I had no idea as to what to do other than to just keep getting them around rabbits. I lived out in the country and rabbits would always sit out along side of the road in the evening. So when the pups got about 3 months old I would get them up in my arms take them out by the road and point their heads at the rabbit until the rabbit would run off. Then i would set the pups down and hope for the best. After a fews times they were not only sight chasing the rabbits but were running tracks. I was hooked and have been now for 38 years.

I have had beagles more of my lief than not. But took ajob working out on the road and did'nt have time to fool with them. After about five years the lord blessed me with chance to go to work close to home. So I have me some more beagles and can't wait to turn them loose again. So I would say Im am hooked on rabbit hounds for good.
