I did a double Reggie cross. The pups just turned 8 weeks old today so I will have to wait until later to see how they turn out but one thing for sure is that they all are super nice looking pups. The pups are double Reggie and they have Blue Ninja in their pedigree 3 times on top and 3 times on bottom for a total of 6 times within 5 generations. In fact I am planning on building my future pack off linebred Reggie blood.

if your looking for results that we have had from double crossing ninja i can tell what i got and have seen a lot of. As far as i'm concerned Ninja is the best dog that has came out of Jack of All Trades. He threw the total package in his pups, and it's one of the top bloodlines out there now, but when you double ninja to much you take the speed away. You can breed two fast ninja dogs and end up with a litter of meduim speed pups. They will be tough as hell, but you take the foot away. So, you have to know what your style is and what kind of end results you are looking for. Foot is the easiest thing to breed for so it isn't hard to add back to the line later. Again, this is my experience with double Ninja.....I like med to upper med speed so bring on double Ninja pups all day long for me! :D You will have solid dogs top to bottom and they will be RABBIT machines!

Hopefully a few more people might add to this...I would like to hear what kind of results they have had. You have heard a few post talk about how good Turbo outcrosses, but Ninja is another one that you can outcross to anything. I would research what the BEST OUTCROSSES have been if your looking for fast diogs, but if your after the overall package line breed it!

A buddy on here has a female named Woodsdale Jaws that I would love to have ninja pups out of! Aks Rneil how his pups are doing out of Sport and Jaws.

Good Luck.

Greasy -

Dana and I kinda teamed up on a litter of Reggie / Blue Ninja pups that are now about 11 months old and doing very well. The dam is Shady Grove's Ninja's Echo - she is top and bottom Blue Ninja and at over 10 yrs old is still a heck of a gun dog! This past gun season she held her own and then some against younger kennel mates and buddy's dogs that are in their prime.

Echo was bred to Reggie and here is what I can tell you about the litter so far and the jury is still still out as far as I am concerned until we can take them thru this upcoming gun season....that is the true test. The pups started early and very quickly.....I mean basically the first time they were put on a rabbit. They seem as a whole to hunt very well and hard and do well in the check area, coming back to the point of loss and working it quickly outward. And they appear to be very smart dogs with good foot for their size. And they all have big mouth and use them correctly.

The one thing I would say that is a bit of a disappointment is that the whole litter turned out to be fairly small dogs. Dana and I both run 14" - 15" dogs and the largest pup is probably 13 3/4 at 11 months. There is one pup that ended up in AL and I'm not sure how he has progressed or how large he ended up. But all the others are small. Echo, the dam is about 13 1/2" but she has been bred twice before to 15" studs and both times produced 15' pups. She was bred to Reggie and produced a whole litter of pups under 14". I've heard from a number of folks that Reggie tends to throw alot of small pups. Not to take anything away from him or his reproducing power, but if you are hoping for 15" pups, you may want to take a big female to him. One female pup, that may be smartest and hardest hunter in the litter went to Chad Parks down in LA. She is probably no bigger than 12" and we look forward to seeing what he can do w/ her. I'm sure there are some swamp rabbit down there that are just about as big as she is.

Let me know if you have any specific questions.

I have 12 week old pups off 2 Reggie half mates, so far they are showing great qualities, very out going pups. I did end up with a few genetic flaws (kinked tails) 2 out of 8 pups had kinked tails, but that is to be expected when breeding that close. I have high hopes for these pups. All mine look like they are going to be 14-15" at this point.

Go back and read sanfordssj post as I think he has mentioned something important and something I had heard and observed myself.About 15 years ago when I had first moved here to Tn. and shortly after Ninja had died I was talking with a couple of guys that ran in the Mid-West trials.I had a daughter of Ninja x Greenbriar Charity at the time that
I was pretty high on and was looking to breed her. They weren't that excited about Ninja dogs as they said quote" he doesn't have the speed we need in the Mid-West".That statement at the time surprised me as I had seen Ninja run on several occasiopns in Large Pack on Hare trials where he had no problem being up where all the action was.In 1993 in a 9 month span he placed 1'st six times ,2'nd three times,a 4'th and an N.B.Q.These trials were spread from Canada to Massachusetts to Arkansas and Louisianna finishing him to an I.F.C.I always figured that a hound that was that successful over all those types of terrain and conditions was "fast enough" for me.
I bred my Ninja bitch to a linebred D.F.J. male. This hound would have been considered your typical southern style cottontail dog; medium speed on the line check dog.The resulting pups kept all of the foot of their mother and had the improved line control and closer check work of their sire.Just as I had hoped. I then bred one of these female pups to a Ninja son [ same cross as Blue Barry was ].These pups made excellant dogs [Echo that Briarhopper mentioned is one of them ] but they did seem to lose some of the foot that i had seen in others of Ninja blood.Echo was subsequently bred to Canadian F.C. Filmore's Northern Sly and A.R.H.A. Rabbit Champion Mountain View J-Low and produced pups with good foot speed.Pete and I assumed that breeding her to Reggie and the Turbo influence would give them all the foot we were looking for and I think that was successfull.
If you can do the research you'll find that Ninja and a lot of the dogs related to him [littermates and dogs out of him] never carried the reputation as windsplitters/high flyers, etc. His brothers Big Ben,Handy Man,Leroy Brown and sisters Conna,Missy and Mimi were known to have the credentials as rock solid, lots of bottom, intelligent, true mouthed, decent nosed, tough rabbit dogs gifted with extreme concentration while running their rabbit.F.C. Buckeye Ninja Blue Boy who finished in the Mid-West didn't have a ton of foot according to some who ran with and/or judged him but it was said he could turn a pack on a rabbit time after time and keep it all together.
Ninja's mother was Greenbriar's Branko's Tootsie who was out of I.F.C. Birch Haven Bruiser. From what I've been told by Branko and Jerry Blair [Bruiser's owner] neither of those dogs would be considered "fast" by today's standards but they were definetly given the kudos for being extremely tough hounds with super noses that could run when many others didn't know a rabbit had passed that way.
As was previously mentioned a strong linebred Blue Ninja bloodline seems to be able to pass along it's influence and charecteristics with a fairly high percentage even when outcrossed with an unrelated family. From what I see the Turbo x Ninja crosses have provided some good results.Another cross with Ninja bred females that resulted in a very high percentage of top hounds for Jack Blum of Canada was when he crossed them on to Haunted Hill Shaker. If you are someone that thinks the Ninja line needs more foot then I think the evidence is there to show that by bringing in a Turbo or Shaker you can increase the octane rating pretty easy.

Many of us when breeding focus on a particular dog that we would like to see their traits be dominant in the pups we are producing. We say " I like Blue Ninja,I like Turbo,I like Junie,I like Northway, etc. These are the easily recognizable studs or kennels that recieve a lot of attention and well they should as their performance in the field and in the breeding pen makes them stand out.
BUT,don't ever forget that not every stud or line is going to be the perfect match in every cross made to them. Most lines will cross better with some lines than to others. What we all should be trying to do is identify those "nick" crosses. And ALWAYS,ALWAYS keep in mind what you are breeding to the chosen stud and what that female is bringing to the cross as far as family history of traits and charecteristics.
An example that I will share is two females that I have: both are 15",close to the same age, both are A.R.H.A. Rabbit Champions and have the same amount of running and gunning experience behing them. One is out of Reggie and a top and bottom linebred Syris McGee female. The other is out of Turbo Charged Thunder Blue [Reggie's littermate brother ] and a straight Branko female direct from his kennel. One would assume that Reggie and Thunder are certainly not identical but pretty similar in looks, actions, running style, same pedigree, etc.
My Syris female is a much closer line running dog and a good check dog with around a 7---7 1/2 on foot speed.Syris was not a super fast dog but was outstanding at check work and staying on his rabbit.
The female from the Branko female runs the line but is much more able to drift it abit and can run with her head up quite often. She works a good check area but will fire out a lot faster and her foot is more like a 9.
Strictly as a generalization I would say that one hound runs a more "cottontail" type of race [Syris ] and the other one a more "hare" type of style [Branko ].
Now before everyone jumps in a says "a good dog should be able to run any kind of rabbit" I totally agree and both these females perform well on cottontail, hare and swampers.I'm just trying to point out in my convoluted way that what you breed to that "line" or particular stud you are following can make a BIG difference.
Many talk about crossing Turbo and Ninja like it is some kind of outcross. If you look back in the older pedigrees you'll see that in reality it is strong linebreeding from Heli-Prop and Ninja to their sire Jack of all Trades, Armando's Little Conman out of Jiggs Maggie's Mate who was Jack of all Trades half brother,to Jack's and Camp Creek Gertrude's sire Able's East Coast Trimmer being on the top and bottom and Otterbrook Sam top and bottom in Reggie's pedigree. When you cross dogs with a Turbo Powered By Prop background and a Blue Ninja bakground you are using a family of strong linebred hounds whose influence can carry deep .Is it any wonder that this line of dogs produces???
