Bluegrass, I dont want illegals in this country but I do have a problem with you stating that the only reason they are here is to vote. I dont know how the voting is taken in Arizona but here in Kentucky you must show your ID if the person at the voting both does not know you. If they are here to vote they must be registered within that county and if this is the case then the problem starts with local officials and not the president.

The way any state law reads is that you can give more rights to a person but you cannot take away a base right that has been made law by federal gov. Prime example of this is on DUI's, the federal gov. has ruled that any police officer can force an individual to give a blood sample without a warrant or the persons consent but here in KY we must get consent from the person or a warrant to take the blood. As you can see KY has given more rights to the individuals then the federal gov. did. This is what the law suit in Arizona is about and if the state of Arizona wins this case then I hope that KY will fall in line.

That is as far reaching as I have ever heard. We have a problem with the border and it has nothing to do with either party or votes. The law suit in Arizona has to do with peoples rights and when you start taking away the rights of the people then we have a problem. It is funny that the republican party stands for "less control of the government" then wants to create more laws to control the people. This new law in Arizona reminds me of the old USSR; people must have legal papers to travel between the states then we will use local law enforcement as a federal military.
Come on people there is a way to control the illegals from being in this country and that is to use the laws that we have on the books and to increase the border patrol. Local law enforcement has enough on their plate and now they want us to stop people and start asking for papers. Who are we going to stop? just the mexicans, just the blacks, just the jews, just the white people. If you ask it of us then we must treat everyone the same and if a 20 year old mexican cannot produce legal papers we must take him into custody right? How about a 20 year old white girl out of the same car?
If you said they are different, then you are asking local law enforcement to do "racial profiling" and if you have ever been in law enforcement you know how that can turn out.

Old blood that is a terrible post, first most american citizens carry their drivers license and social security cards on their person I know I do and have since I started driving. Second you have to be stopped for breaking some law not because of what you look like. Third illegal means they have aleady broke the law ther only being stopped for breaking another law. Fourth if the government was doing their job there would be NO need for any state to take action. Illegals are drianing the country and everybody wants somebody to do something about it until somebody takes action and then they want to complain. Nobody has said anything about Stopping them For being MEXICAN!!!! BUT during the investigation of the Crime or A CRIME then ASK for proper Documentation IE a Drivers license and proof of insurance the Same documents you and I have to provide at a traffic stop IF they cannot produce those Documents then They can be asked for proper Documentation...

Rabbithoundjb, that is what i thought. The new law states that if an individual officer thinks that a person might be illegal than he/she can stop and ask them about their citizenship and ask for their papers. They do not have to break another law before this happens and when we open that can of worms we are starting up the old USSR again. Another thing that you must consider is the individuals that are not of age and dont have a drivers license "alot of 14 and 15 year old illegals out there". We need our federal agencies to enforce the laws that are on the books and not ask our local officers to do a military/federal function.

Once you say Mexicans then we have a problem with racial profiling and once we start treating them different on a traffic stop is when we get fired or suied because of civil rights.

I am all for stopping the illegals from entering our country and I am all for getting them out of our country but we as local law enforcement have our hands tied. We have federal agencies to do this job and if this was to just inforce the old laws then they would not have had to written a new one. There is a difference between the federal law on the books and the new law by Arizona, if the governer of Arizona wanted the federal law inforced by the way that it was written then all he would have to do is send out a memo to every law enforcement agency asking to crack down on it.

Wrong they have to be stopped for a legal infraction first to be checked. They can't just be stopped randomly for NO reason because of what they look like. If they suspect after they have them pulled yes they can ask for there papers. Even if someone can't prove citizenship when there stopped , there are many ways to determine citizenship, birth certificate, social security number, it's not like they will haul them across the border on the spot. If there legal shouldn't be hard to prove.

Rabbithoundjb, I am not against you on this but once you start treating someone different then we have a problem. I dont know if you have a child or not but if he/she was pulled over and asked for legal papers showing citizenship and they could not provide that information and then they were taken to the local jail until they could prove who they said they were then you would get pissed. I would get pissed if it was my family. Just like TC stated, it is not hard to get a drivers license "legal or not" and if this is all we go by for citizenship then we have problem.
How many people on this board has a teenage son or daughter that does not have a drivers license or a SS card on them. How many people dont carry a drivers license or SS card with them, how many people has never went for a license exam. These are the problems that local law enforcement runs into and if a good lawyer can show that the officer only detained mexicans or non-white individuals then his AZZ is fired or suspended. These are the problems that we are going to run into. Like I said before, if the new Arizona law was just like the one on the books then we would not be having this post.

Any officer who is only stopping mexicans should be fired because mexicans are not the people in this country or arizona who are commiting crimes. So your telling me in the age of computers that an officer can't verify citizenship of a person in question most times on the spot. I have 2 kids one 26 and one 20 and I would much rather them be detained by police than hit and killed by an illegal drunk with no license that will just go back where they came from and hide.

Asking people to verify their citizenship is not treating anyone any different than if you travel out of this country.
