dog won't hunt some times??

Post by south mtn beagles »

I have a friend that I bought these three red dogs from and he still has the brother to them,My question is,the brother is the same age size and all but some times he'll stand there with the handler instead of being in the brush looking for the rabbit,is there a secret way to get him back interested?? at times he'll be the one in front and others well he's on the side line!!

Has the dog ever been chased by a yote or wampass cat or something?I had one that got chased by something one night, and found her the next morning curled up in a pile.Ever since than she stays real close to me.She does hunt real good, most of the time, but If there is something out there she don`t like, she is back to me.

I dont know if he has or not,it's like he's going to hunt when he wants to and thats it,we put him with another pack that was slower so he wouldn't be so pushed and he was leading but then it was time for the side line again.

Kick him in the a-- at least he won't just stand around you.

I would try keeping him on a leash by my side, even when he wants to go in. A little of that may make him stay in there, but I got to tell you, I wouldn't mess with him very long. There's no greater sin for a dog in my book than no desire.

Yes sir, this dog is getting ready to go down to south carolina for a stay down there,we are not sure if the dog feels that he is being pushed by my dogs or if he's just lost the desire for the hunt, but these other guys seem to think chasing some swampers might help him out.

Has the dog been shocked off of off game? Some dogs are naturally insecure and too much electricity will make them even less secure. If that is the case any kind of abuse will only make it worse.

So right Bobby!

Might not be hunting, but sure won't be not hunting in sight of me!

I've seen dogs waiting on a real jump dog to do the jumping when they learn it does most of it anyway.

Also seen dogs not hunt that had been shocked for coldtrailing or opening before jumping.

Also some will wait to join in until they are sure its not trash as they are afraid of being accused by association and getting shocked.

get another dog. kicking will accomplish nothing. it's abuse and the only thing the dog will learn is not to go near you.

Dogs have to want to be with the other dogs and not the human.
Some have to be broken from wanting to stay with you. Some will stand in the road with you and wait for the dogs to run the rabbit to them same as you do. Road Warriors!
Its either teach it quickly to go to the dogs or leave it in the woods dead, but, humanely. A kick in the butt is best alternative and first choice!
The shelters are too full of sorry Beagles that they have to gas to death, especially at the first of hunting season when those sold in summer as good dogs are really seen for what they are with the brush down and when they see and hear a gun go off!

IF YOU FEEL STRONGLY IN EITHER DIRECTION, STATE IT, BUT THE NAME CALLING IS UNCALLED FOR EITHER WAY. I THINK THAT IS WHAT MR. VEST DID. HE DID NOT CALL NAMES JUST EXPRESSED HIS OPINION.

SORRY JUST HAD TO EXPRESS MINE

So bobby, does that mean I was abused when I got a few swift kicks in the butt. I don't call a swift kick in the butt abuse. Starving animals and beating them relentlessly for no reason is abuse. A kick in a butt isn't. Even a good dog needs his butt whooped once or twice.
