There is a cure for heartworms but it is very expensive to have the vet administer and I mean very expensive. There are some other methods in use as well that will also get the job done but in both cases you run the risk of killing the dog. He will die eventually anyhow but it does work a good bit of the time and will prolong the life of your hound if it doesnt kill it first. Just about like chemotherapy for humans. We have a guy down here who sells some stuff from under the counter that will do the job, much cheaper but I think it only has about a fifty percent success rate. All in all if you really like your hounds it is just a lot easier to use preventative than play russian roulette with your hounds life.

team fudd, if we put Ohlinger's delusions aside ,I seem to batting a thousand here.No disrespect meant , but I posted earlier that I believe Drontal is not effective against hooks and whips. I can be made to believe otherwise, and I am not an expert on this matter but not wanting to lead anyone in the wrong direction, I would like to know where you got this info. Drontal's active ingredient is praziquantel, and I don't believe this is effective against hooks and whips. thanks, in advance for your reply on this matter, and if I am wrong then I am wrong!

Not starting in on any arguments, but some facts I researched on the Web about Drontal Plus, not hearsay from what any of us think about it.
I copied and pasted the info below from Drontals website.

All About Drontal What are the active constituents of Drontal chewables?
The active ingredients in the Drontal chewable include Praziquantel, Pyrantel (as Pyrantel embonate) and Febantel. The concentrations of each of these components varies in accordance with tablet size.

What sizes are available for dogs and what are the dose rates?
Drontal worming puppy suspension – 1ml treats 1 kg.
Drontal allwormer tablets for small dogs and puppies – 1 tablet treats 3kg
Drontal allwormer for dogs – 1 tablet treats 10kg
Drontal allwormer for large dogs – 1 tablet treats 35kg
What worms does Drontal treat?
Roundworms, Hookworms, Whipworms and Tapeworms (Echinococcus granulosus – Hydatid tapeworms), (Dipylidium caninum – common flea tapeworm) (Taenia spp., Taenia ovis, T. pisiformis,
T. hydatigena). Also aids in the control of shedding oocysts of the protozoan Giardia spp in dogs.

How often should I worm my dogs?
Hookworms and Roundworms – Dogs and Puppies treat at 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks of age and then every month until six months of age, thereafter every 3 months or on veterinary advise.

Whipworms – Treat every 6 to 8 weeks after 3 months of age.

Tapeworms – treat every 3 months except in a hydatid tapeworm area where every 6 weeks is recommended, or on veterinary advise. Dogs can become re-infested with worms and treatment should be repeated.

Will I see worms in my dogs faeces after Drontal?
In most cases worms are rapidly killed in the intestines of the dogs and are broken down internally. In some instances if high burdens of worms are present, worms may be seen in faeces up to 48 hours after treatment. This is most commonly seen with roundworms.

Can I treat pregnant bitches?
Yes. It is recommended to treat pregnant bitches prior to mating, then 10 days before whelping and at 2 and 4 weeks after whelping.

Once again, Drontal used to be Praziquantel , which I do not believe will kill hooks and whips. Mr. Crabtree , I believe what you are refering to is Drontal Plus. Not Drontal. I do not Believe that Praziquantel will take care of whips and hooks. The plus designation is because of the added ingredients of Pyrantel ( for round and hooks) and Febantel ( for whips) without these last two ingredients it is Drontal ,which we were orginally posting about and once again I do not believe will kill hooks and Whips.

GWYOUNG,
That is correct. Regular Drontal doesnt have the Febantel in it.I should have put Drontal Plus, as that is what I researched.I will edit my earlier post

da@@ you guys making me post again....

drontal PLUS- will get the worms all except heart-worms BUT it won't get whipworms if its bad infestations because it digests to fast to kill them.... thats why again---- SAFEGUARD IS THE BEST WORMER BECAUSE YOU CAN GIVE IT SEVERAL TIMES IN A ROW.

sometimes whips take two times of worming with the lifecycle they have... giving drontal plus twice in two weeks isn't effective as safeguard or recommended...

the only thing it doesnt cover drontal plus does is the other form of tape.

Mo 5000,
You think Safeguard is best because you can give it several times in a row, I hate it because you have to give it 3 days in a row. It works good, but things come up and I have to get my wife to feed . I just like being able to worm 1 dose per dog. I treat mine regular and havent had such an infestation that the Drontal Plus wouldnt take care of it.

@mike- i have and it sux!!!!!

spent almost 50 bucks on two dogs on drontal and STILL had whipworms in next fecal, Thats when the vet said that i should forget it and use safeguard, he recommended the paste but then said liquid is easier to dose.

three days is precisely why i like it better... ya pain to give but thats why its so safe
... there is almost NO wear on the kidneys even at absurd doses.....

Seems like a lot of good info so far, any thoughts on this wormer anyone. http://www.pets-megastore.com.au/canine ... p-772.html Team Fudd correct me if wrong, giving raw rabbit meat or liver heart lungs will not cause a dog to get tapes.

Lethal dose for safeguard is insane- they fed 100 times the recommended dose to dogs every day for years before it affected the kidneys, the reason you give it three days in a row is that it metabolizes so fast!!! It is the safest wormer on the planet...a lethal dose would be a dog eating an actual gallon at one sitting....

in some medicines i conseed the active ingredient case. i.e. termidor/frontline but in the case of safeguard its 100% the same as the grained powder in dog form.... I teach chemistry in school and know this is the case. its legally required to be on the drug msds sheet... look it up.

I wouldn't give my animals or my kids something unsafe but its literally the difference between getting liquid penicillin and pill penicillin....

THE DRUG COMPANIES KNOW THIS---- I am not a conspiracy theory guy but this is how they make profit... I worked in a pharmacy while going to college....dog lovers will pay more so they market accordingly----
Mo.Beagler 5000 would you explain a little more on termidor/ frontline. Thanks

Steve- the active ingredient in frontline is the same ingredient in termidor (termite repellent/killer)

the active ingredient is 100 % the same (meaning the one that kills the unwanted species...)

In termidor only 9 percent of the active ingredient is used and the other chemicals used are 90% (most likely water) except there is a binding agent to help keep the ingredients from seeping away during rain, freezing, shifting of the foundation etc.... it bonds to where its laid basically. This ingredient is not in frontline for dogs....

I HAVE NO IDEA IF IT HARMS THE DOG OR NOT---- I'm just saying its different.... Most likely it doesn't but you would have to do a study to prove it either way....I have used it on some dogs with no problem and never had a reaction but just because it hasn't happened to me doesn't mean there isn't any adverse reactions....It takes several hundred trials to prove one way or another... but still I consider it safe enough to use for now--- the argument about safeguard though is RIDICULOUS!!!! just read the msds on how safe it actually is.

Try Equimax horse wormer, one click per dog and dogs are from 16 inch 35 lbs to 12 inch 15 lbs.

It is: Ivermectin 1.87% and praziquantel 14.03%

No worm problems of any kind.

Exactly!

Gwyoung I'm done foolin with ya lol. You do what ya want it don't affect me in the least. just don't understand why you would choose to use that over something that is actualy made for you're dog. I've used Safeguard horse paste a few years back, it seemed like i was always coming down with worms every couple of months the safeguard was'nt killing them off, Drontal took care of the problem. I don't know why but i let a talk me into trying Valbazen, he claimed it treated ghardia cocsidia (spelling?) and killed alll versions of worms in dogs, tapes was like 3 days in a row and then 2 weeks later another 3 days in a row...all this other stuff is hassel when you can just use drontal in one shot and it's a taken care of...for the piece of mind it gives me i won't use anything else. Sorry Drontal PLUS. Lol. All i'm sayin is if it says for horses only guess what it's only made for horses not dogs there are easier and more effective means out there. Should i mention safer ? Safeguard trust me if you could kill a dog with safeguard i prbly would have a few years ago, it was too expensive for me to get rid of worms with safeguard 25 bucks a tube for that horse paste and one tube would do 5 dogs if you did the redneck guesstimation dosage. If you had 5 dogs you'd need 3 tubes with came out to 75 bucks you can almost get a bottle of 20 pills of drontal for that price and have enough to get 5 dogs 4 times.

I'm with you Alabama John. That is what I was taught by a good friend who has been worming coon hounds and beagles for FORTY years and never lost one at a young age to anything other then a car or freak accident. Instead of Equimax I use Zimmectrin Gold pretty dang close to the same thing. No worms no problems the END.
