break a dog from opening before the rabbit is up?

Post by duckbuster38401 »

How can you break a dog from opening before the rabbit is up and running? I have a female that is just a year old and she will open on a cold track but will get the rabbit up. How can I break her from opening early? Thanks

Why do you want to? If its not meaningless babble and the rabbit gets jumped then i don't see the problem...

i suppose its just preference but whatever you do to discourage the pup be careful you don't ruin it.. I can see that ending up bad...

I actually like to have a dog that talks alittle before the rabbit gets up, it gets all the dogs to that area and find the rabbit. As long a he/she is right more then not.

Now if u have a dog that is always cold trailing 5 min before the rabbit get up or is only true 50% of the time. To hell with that.

Its kinda tricky to correct because u dont know if the rabbit might have slipped out before u got on em. If im positive the dog is cold trailing i will verbally correct him/her. That usually does the trick for that paticular cold trail. Some dogs will cold trail no matter what, day in and day out and never produce a rabbit. Thats the one i let go.

I feel that the more i run my dogs the less they cold trail but i think its just in some dogs blood.

What's been happening, she opens way early 100 yards or so. She has a lot of grit and loves to run a rabbit. She hits the bushes and hunts hard all time. I hate to just give up on her, was not sure if there is a way to get her out of it. What about solo time. Does that help?

Where ya from? Sounds like what you need is a good terrier if all your wanting is a jump dog, I'll trade you a terrier pup for your beagle and we'll both be happy ;).

I'm from middle Tennessee, it's frustrating when she is opening on the track and my other dogs get in front and jump the rabbit it's like listening to a split race. I don't care for it. Is there a way to break a dog from doing it?

I have a good jump dog, I'm asking is there any way I can help her get to the point where she uses her mouth right?

i dont think you can break the dog from opening on feeder tracks. I would think she will always do it. Im sure there are some on here will say they broke them by shocking, but I doubt you will get far that way.

My suggestion would be sell her to someone it dont matter to and buy one that dont open till rabbit is up if she not cold trailing forever i wouldnt shock her if she is getting the rabbit up i like one that opens min or so before jump but like for the rabbit to move

I believe they all smell the scent. It is just that some dogs get excited easier than others and bark on a colder scent. Dogs trail the same scent, just some bark earlier. There are exceptions though as some dogs have a more powerful nose or some are only interested in a hot track. Some people prefder a dog to bark a little before the rabbit is jumped, some don't.

Barking on alot cold tracks and not producing is a problem barking a little before the rabbit is jumped sometimes is good Like has been said some smell better than others if she is not cold trailing for along time before its jumped i wouldnt worry about it if tracking and not producing another situation JMO

Thats hard to do,only seen it happen once and really don't know if the hound figured it out or the owner made it happen. If you can't live with it get rid of the hound.I have a female that throws a out of place bark or 2 in the check but in a pack she quiets down and works a check right.Go Figure.

It's the first beagle I have gotten from an 8 weeks old pup. I don't want to give up on her. She cold trails bad. I think she just has not gotten it figured out yet. She hunts hard, got a good mouth, and she is a good looking little blue tick. The kids are attached to her, so getting rid of her is out of the question. Would a mild correction on the collar help. She might cold trail for 20 min or so and then get a rabbit up. I am hoping that the good weather and running in march helps. She is the type of dog that will do anything to please you, good with the kids. She would run her own rabbit at 4 months old. I figured with time she would get it worked out.
