Starting a Running Pen

Post by RunemRagged »

I am in the beginning planning phase of starting to build a running pen, a puppy pen is what we have in mind. We own approximately 120 acres, 30 of those acres are fields. I think we are going to use one field that is 5 acres and possibly go into the woodline. The field is unplanted at the moment but had soy beans in it last year and will have corn in it this year if we don't take it out of rotation. Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions or comments? On materials (what to plant), setup/layout, price on the best type of fence. Any comments will help this will be my first running enclosure and we want to make it the best possible.

I would suggest using fence to hold bunnies and dogs in.LOL Glad to see you have finally gotten on the board.Had a blast running them swampers this weekend we didn't take alot but i would rather listen to them 2 hour runs any day of the week.

Are you talking about fencing in a field with row crop or woods, not trying to be negative but you are wasting time and money to build a good puppy pen in a field. You wont beable to keep a rabbit in it.I have a puppy pen and I have good cover but still have a hard time keeping rabbits.I would suggest enclosing the thickest ,nastiest place you have in order to be successful and keep rabbits.

well we are going to take it out of rotation and let it grow up plant some trees (pines) build brush piles my buddy suggested using pilets two tepee style then brushing them in inside the woodline stays pretty wet (when we arent in a drought of course) i am worried about the predator birds hawks and owls what was the method used i have taken six foxes off the farm and seen my bunny population grow but the birds concern me because they will have trees on the outside to sit and hunt from as well as a power line directly running over the middle of the pen thanks for the posts
