Just got back to work after a week of pounding hare in the U.P. We had a great time although it was a very long ride.
Great to see Del and our host, Harry. First few days it got hot but we still ran the fire out of the hare. As the week went by the running got better and on Friday we had rain all day. Ran one hare for 1 hour and 45 mins with little to no checks. Our puppies did a very good job for their first time on hare.
We found spots where the hounds would be running two hare at a time and many times had three races going on at one time.
Grouse were everywhere. We did manage to get 5 of them and a woodcock.
I look forward to this trip every year and it just can't get here fast enough.
Thanks to Crabby, Sean, Troy, and Del for a fun filled week.
I'm sure there will be pictures to follow.

Sounds like a really good time. Something I have wanted to do for a very long time but would probably have to find out how Crabby lost weight and got in such good shape. (I am not willing to do it by chasing women as my adopted son said he was doing - Anne and I celebrated 48 yrs last week) I hear there is a lot of walking involved. Is that true? Bobby

Congrats, Bobby.
No, very little walking involved unless you choose to. Many races we just sat in the lawn chairs and watched as the hare crossed the roads. I think I walk less hare hunting then Cottontail hunting.

Jim,Crabby,Sean,Troy are the beagle guys to hang out with on a vacation lots of laughs, running dogs, and jump mtn. juice. I just wonder if Sean ever got a hare or if he had any hat left to shoot at. LOL. Had a great time and look forward to next year!

Warm weather for the U.P this time of year but the dogs ran hard. I've got a few pics. but Crabtree may have more.

How do Hare taste as compared to cottontails and are they tougher? Never ran, killed, or ate a Hare? Bobby

The main thing with wild game is knowing how to cook it.
I've never had a bad hare. Slow cook covered and turn up the heat at the end to crisp the coating. A big hare you can brown and cover with white gravy and allow to finish cooking adding water as needed(kinda like steaming in a slow cooker), mouth watering with golden biscuits to sop up the drippings...

We got an open seat if'n your interested, but you'd have to hold your hound on your lap as the dogbox is full. If you got a trailer, we'll pull the whole kennel for you tho...

That's wrong, Lee. lol He can't defend his self.
We ran into one of these varmits and it wasn't a pretty sight. He was tuff but between Crabby and Sean, he didn't come out on the good end.

They won't attack a dog but if a hound gets too close they will load them up with quills. They say it is very painful to the hound and are very difficult to remove. The locals have lost a few dogs to them.

Pork-en-tines are pretty slow moving. An old guy like me can out run one. They don't shoot quills or attack but if you barely touch one your stuck.

Del I didn't get a hare .............I got 3!!!! LOL I calmed down and with a little coaching from Hound Dog n Crabby was hitting the mark. I was all spray n pray the first few days. As far as the hat goes....... you could feel a slight breeze. Had a great time. One of the coolest things I have ever done in my life, already looking forward to next year!!!! If you guys can stand me for another week anyway!!!! Lol
