I need some help buying some pups.

Post by GR »

I need some help buying some pups or a young running dog.

I want them for hunting and pleasure mainly. Trials are not as important to me but if one turns out to be good enough I may attend some. I train and hunt mainly cottontail but also run and hunt hare. The pups parents must be capable on snow as I hunt hare every year in some nasty snow conditions in NY and PA. I have hunted twenty below zero before and it takes a lot of nose.

I like a very clean dog with lots of hunt, toughness, good foot, and tons of nose and line control. They don’t have to be blazing fast. I don’t like dogs that run off the end at a turn or check and peel off to the right or left like a fighter jet and make a giant loop swinging all over the place. I also don’t like a dog that is hyper and works a check like a pinball. I like them to snap back to the last track at a turn or over run and work from the point. I like even tempered and level headed dogs that handle well and are not hyper and mouthy in the kennel. I hate over competitive dogs that disregard the rabbit and race for the front or swing out from the pack to cheat and try to cut off the pack. I like dogs that are rabbit minded, they run the rabbit, not the pack, are on the line and have little wasted motion.

I am not a novice at the beagles. I was injured and out of the game for a few years and have lost track of a lot of stuff. I have judged a lot of AKC SPO Licensed trials and have done GDB also. I live in the Pittsburgh PA area and the SPO/GDB trials in my area are too conservative and do not promote a rabbit dog. They promote line running specialists with no hunt or toughness. Everyone seems more concerned with style than accomplishment and many of the trialers seem not to hunt. I have judged eastern PA licensed SPO and some in NY in the past and they were a little bit more accomplishment oriented and to my liking. I have attended UBGF trials and they are too conservative and don’t have near enough search and toughness for me. I have attended several Midwest Association SPO trials and the dogs I saw there were a lot closer to what I like but were a bit too rough for me on the average. Not too fast, just too rough, sloppy, and over competitive for me. I like something in between that is closer to the Midwest than the UBGF. I did see some dogs that I really liked at the Midwest trials but they were the exception rather than the rule.

I like some of the LPH dogs that I have seen but tend to like the cleaner running more conservative blood and individuals from that format and I really liked some of the dogs I have seen place and win at SPOH trials. I have been told that they run a clean dog in Maine LPH and SPOH trials but have never witnessed it first hand. I don’t like LPH style but prefer strong SPO style of dog.

I have seen many Branko and Northway bred dogs and on average they are to rough and hard for me. Recently I got to see some real nice dogs out of MJR Mitsou Argentevil Striker and some very clean running Canadian females out of Quebec. They were exactly what I like. They were smooth and clean with little wasted motion and moved at a strong run, not a full tilt drive, just a hard run. Not as fast as the Branko but not slow by any means either. I also saw a couple from a Striker/Ranger Dan/Mr T cross that I liked, and also one from Striker/Larsens Sadie. These dogs were all level headed and calm in temperament and were not hyper and never lost their cool. The guys that own these dogs do not have any pups or young ones for sale currently and will not until next spring at the earliest. I would call Mr. Santos and inquire about some puppies or dogs but I want papers with them at the time of sale.

I hate trash runners, cold trailers and mouthy dogs. I prefer chop mouth or squall and don’t like ball mouths. Conformation must be sound, no crooked legs or bad bites. Must be at least 13” and prefer 13.5” and up. The dogs must have a lot of hunt and search in them.

I am looking to buy a pup or two or maybe a young running hound out of some of the Striker blood I mentioned above and similar running bloodlines. I want a female but would consider a male if the parents really light my fire. They must be AKC registered and I want to be able to see the mother of the pups run or some siblings/kennel mates run.

My comments are not meant to offend anyone and are meant so people can understand what I am looking for. I have seen some awesome Branko bred dogs and some good dogs at all the different trials I have attended. I just tried to paint a picture of what I like.

Can someone PM me Dale Larsens contact info.

Anybody that can help me out and point me in the right direction please PM me or post here. Thank you.

If your not interested in a pedigree and really want what you say you want, youi should come watch some of my stuff run. They are AKC registered but have only ran in UKC and ARHA.They have won about every big hunt you can win in these two formats.I have some young dogs that are not old enough to run in trials yet but will be AKC trialing them as soon as possible. They are blak and tans with bluetick rings around there necks for the most part, some do come out try color.I know you want striker dogs but just thought if your open minded you might want to give them a try. Thanks for your time.

I am open minded, I have never been to a ARHA or UKC hunt. Since you are posting as a guest, I have no idea where you are located. Send me some info. Thanks

GR,
I live in Maryland but hunt in central PA mostly. I have a cross that you described above. I do have a male and 2 females from it. If any go over 13" they will be for sale. The male is out of Ranger Dan and Cool Running Sonic, he is clean and as hard a hunter as you will fine. He is not overly competitive or overly fast, but he can stay down in Large Pack, with no places. He has never been picked up in SPO, PBGA or Mid-West. He took a 3rd last week in SPO and had more hunt then any of the dogs he was cast with, the judges even remarked about it. The dam is a grand daughter to Ali-Baba and Blue Ninja. She is fast and clean with a tight mouth. She has made the winners pack in both SPOs entered, but was too fast to stay down. This cross is producing some nice hounds. I have not decided to make this cross again this year, I have been receiving some pressure from hunting/trialing friends to breed her to Speedy Sport.

I also own, nr IFC Awful Bawling Gabe (13"), FC Woodeye's Super Girl (15") and FC ThreeJays Jack's Flash (15"). Gabe is out of Cowbay Striker and Dog Barking Babe. He has show dog looks and 5 wins on hare. He is now running cottontail, fast and fairly clean. He made the winners pack in a mid-West SPO, only one entered. He is not as close on the checks as you described above, but he is very successful on checks. Flash is out of the legendary cross Haunted Hill Shaker and Angie. Flash is a fast and strong dog, a true Large Pack hound. She is currently in heat and I'm going to breed her to Gabe. Super Girl is a super dog with 5 wins in Large Pack and SPO. I breed her to Argenteuil Striker this summer, but no pups. She won't come into heat again until January or there about.

If you have any interest in these crosses i'm making, or if you would like to just run sometime, shoot me a line.

I have a litter of pups two weeks old. They are out of FC Larsens Jackson and my Abby dog. Jackson is out of Striker and Larsens Sadie. He is the best dog I have ever seen. Just like you described. He is also a very fine looking hound. The mother to the pups is from Larsens Rambler who is a littermate to Sadie. She has only been run in ARHA Little pack. She is a rabbit champion and bench champion. Lots of rabbit smarts. No matter who I run her with she almost always ends up producing the rabbits. Awesome hunter and excellent control. It will be difficult to hook up to run because I live in Michigan. However if you are interested give me a call. 231-937-6572. I have six females and four males. Two of the males are lemon and white and one of the females are lemon and white. The rest are tris. They should be 14-15 in. If you want to get ahold of mister Larsen. His number is 231-354-6618. He lives just around the corner and usually has started pups for sale.
