Do your rabbit dogs hit on woodcocks?

Post by BIG ORDEAL »

There must be a huge migration of woodcocks this year because everytime I have run my hounds I have them bumping on woodcocks.I can tell when its a rabbit they are running just by the voices, its like these birds leave just enough scent to make a dog trail.I have seen the birds flush a few times while dogs hitting where they are cruzing the ground.Does anyone have this problem to and can the e-collar correct it.I have bumped the dogs a few times for it but doesnt seem to make a difference.

Yes!!!!!!! Had a pup do it once last year but this year its happened a lot in 1 spot I hunt.I dont and wont shoot anything but a rabbit over my dogs but Im about to go to that spot and see what I cant kick up an kill those things its annoying me.I can tell as soon as the first dog opens and they'll only trail it until it flushes then they'll leave it alone and move on for a rabbit(unless they bump another one)

yes mine have done it but we don't have very many woodcocks to worry about it. They also bark on quail and I let them because I like to shoot quail and eat them. Thats my favorite bird to eat.

Hunted with a older fellow about 2 years ago and he told me that a dog couldnt help but trail a quail cause the scent is as close to rabbit scent as you can get,any truth to this?

I dont think giving them the full juice would help,I suppose I will just lightly bump em off and get them to hunt for a rabbit.

Mine will open up on them. I will bump them if i catch them in time. They do the same with quail.

I have had mine yip and follow a bird. I can tell its not a rabbit just by their sound and how they act. If they flush a bird I just call it a bonus.

In one spot I go to, we'd kick up one or two wodcocks every time, once in a while the dogs would let out a yip but most of the time they would just stick there nose in some briars and out would fly some woodcocks. I do believe, just like with deer, you can break dogs of running birds easily with a shock collar... Pheasants and turkeys are worse with my dogs they absolutely love the smell of those two gamebirds...

Ha! I wondered this weekend if my mouthy dog opened on some because there were A LOT by us and flying up sometimes but mostly running. there were so many rabbits that it was hard to tell but every once in a while he would pop off and no other dog would. I bet thats what it was

My dogs will, and I love it! My new pup can absolutely smoke a pheasant, those things try to run from her but they don't have the footspeed she does so they flush in a hurry. I've had my one male run rabbit, woodcock, pheasant, and grouse in one day. He pretty much runs anything you can shoot at, and won't touch a deer! That's the way it should be in my opinion. It gets a little annoying sometimes if we hunt game lands right after they stock birds cause he'll pick up on scent that bird hunters have flushed out already.

I guess he'd minus out in trials running birds but who cares, I hunt with a gun.
