Re: Coal Mine Challenge (Midwest)
Hey Pual, Thanks for the intrest in our Trial. As Far as the "Hardware", we have given away 4 Tri-Tronis Trash breakers, Over 20- $125-150 coats to class winners, over 20 bags of dog food, a full set of hats to 1st- NBQ ($10-12 per hat), and ribbons 1st-NBQ., since we started having AKC SPO trials. The first Coal MIne Classic (our 1st fall trial) we did give a putrid little trophy for 1st in class, that our AKC Trial secratary at the time picked out that was around $35-45 a piece which too this day is one of my most favorite on the shelf, but also the ugliest, and junkiest thing on the trophy shelf. I challenge you to go to each clubs trials Fall & Spring trials and see who gives away the better prize packages, I think you will find the only trial that will compare would be The Mid-West Run-off. We spend a lot of $ on our Fall trial (most of the time in the red, despit having better #'s than most clubs all year) and try to recoop in the Spring, but still try to give something away that makes people feel good and when they see the hat they won, they go back and have a good day dream from the Coal MIne Challenge.

I hope you started with them sit-ups early last year cause your going to need to just to be able to keep up with Bushwacker! If Bushwacker gives you a passing grade and you have time to recooperate I might hire you to marshal at Central Illinois!

I would take a $10 hat or lead strap over a $30 trophy any day......HTKENNELS wrote:What happened to taking some brass home. The people spend 200.00 to compete and u give them a ribbon and a 5 dollar hat. Times are not that hard. PAUL COMBS...............

I agree! Some folks just dont get it! Some folks are still having issues with some clubs raising the entry fee from $20 to $25 to try to offset the lower entry numbers. Now AKC is raising the fees they charge the club to hold a trial! The clubs either have to raise entry fees or cut back on what they give away to the winners. Our club has always charged a $20 entry fee and given a nice big walnut plaque to the winners as well as rosettes to 1st-nbq. This year we are keeping the entry fee at $20 but cutting the plaques. Most go for the first place and could care less about a ribbon, plaque or some other dust collector.

Re: Coal Mine Challenge (Midwest)
We have gone to blue leads with a brass tag, simple and easy...a local fella makes them for us every year.....I want one of them BAD!!! I get jealous just handing them out....lol. I would be the same way with a hat. I use to do an 8x10 picture but the running around and postage after the trial got to be a little overwhelming...guys loved it but in reality it added an extra day after the trial for me. At the last trial I took the pictures and told them to let me know if they wanted them emailed to them...they can print at Walmart for $5 as easy as I can. Don't mean to sound cold but as a FTS you can drive yourself nuts trying to make everyone happy...yet the fuel, time, postage, pics, etc...was all on my dime. As some would say, I like ya...but not that much.
IMO....It makes no sense to carry a 3' trophy around in your truck from trial to trial but my thinking is everytime they look at that lead they know what dog earned them the lead and what it took to get there, again the same as a hat. Maybe I am wrong but I have a few trophies collecting dust and all of my dogs ribbons are in a shoebox somewhere in a storage container 30 miles from my house. That framed paper with FCGD in front of my dogs name means way more than anything else....I had to buy my own frame BTW.
Getting on with it.....Shame on whomever knocks a club for the "prizes".....I say try running a club sometime
Big brother is gonna take every bit you think you are making....
It can be done but it takes a ton of club member participation to pull off big prizes, or an ambitious person who has the gift of gab and a bunch of time on their hands. Sounds like Central IN will be ringing your phone to help secure donations for their next trial, thanks for raising your hand.
darn that comment got under my skin....Uggghhhh!!!!!!

I won the first 2 trials and was given 2 really nice jackets with my name and dogs name on em. I actually thought they were pretty pimp. Not to mention got to watch joe clark run his a$$ of for several hours. Money well spent.m and m beagles wrote:Hey Pual, Thanks for the intrest in our Trial.
