A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)
Kris,
I had the same proud moment last weekend. My Grandson Nate ( who is usually attached to his Ipod touch or some other gameing device ) called me Saturday night and asked me if I was running in the morning and if I was could he go
He said he didn't want to shoot, he just wanted to hear the dogs run Needless to say, we had a blast I think there's hope for that boy yet I just need to convince his mother in to letting me take him to the Island this fall. One hare run and I know he'll be hooked.
I don't know if Jason gets on here but tell him Chuck said hey.
Nice pictures , Thanks for shareing

Chuck you still chasing those mangy dogs with beagles? Haven't heard from you in a while on any of the other boards. I will tell Jason you said Hi. I had forgotten how much fun running beagles is. I love the big hounds but there is something that still intrigues me about finding that prefect beagle. You can critique the beagles much easier on traits then you can the big hounds. The big hounds is just about the ending thats important. I think where I lost some of my love for beagling was when I stopped gunning hard. The populations in the Northern Lower have dwindled so bad that you didn't even want to shoot a hare once you got one up and running. I remember one of our last runs around the cabin. It took us 4+ hours to get one going and once we did nobody in the group had the desire to shoot it because we knew we would never get another run. That was about 5 years ago now. Populations seem to be coming back slightly. There are so many managy coyotes up there that I'm not sure they will ever fully recover. We are slimming them down and hoping to increase the odds for the small game each winter. I have always wanted to go to the Island. I have heard some awesome stories. We have had similiar success in the U.P. Our last trip there was outstanding!!! Good hearing from you and keep getting that grandson out... He will catch the fever!
hounds... hare.... hunter.... bang... what gets better than that.

Kris,
Yes I do still chase coyote with beagles but not as often as I used to. My Patch Hound "Rusty" got impaled while I was running him a few years back and I had to put him down on the spot. I knew that we would never make it to the vet in time and in reality there was nothing the vet could do for him anyway. 2 years ago I put down my American Foxhound "Flash" He was the first real coyote hound that I owned. He was 18 years when I put him down and that took alot of the desire to run yote's away. Jason saw him run in the pen when he was around 12 or 13 and you can ask him, Flash still had it then. He was just a bit slower. I think that night he ran for 4-5 hrs. and at that age even I was impressed.
Now I spend most of my time running my rabbit hounds. I neglected them for a few years while I was running yotes and I swore that I would never let that happen again. I do on occasion meet up with the boys and run a coyote or two but again not like I used to.
I've told Jason in the past that you guy's are welcome to run Hare at my cottage on the Island. I am there pretty much the whole month of October. I know you guy's are big deer hunters but a long weekend wouldn't hurt.
I am working on getting the Grandson on the Island this year even if it's only for a long weekend. I know that he will love it.
