You make the call
ok here is the set-up you are in a five dog cast hunting the edge of a corn field a deer jumps out about 20 yards ahead of the dogs and heads across the field. White red and yellow collared dogs tear across after him barking every breath green goes hesitates twice and finally goes 20 feet behiend pack but never opens blue collared dog never was a factor all dogs are caught on other side of field in about five minutes you make the call but remember a few of these dogs are owned or being handled by the whose who in the little pack zoo i will post what happen after we get a few answers
dj
it doesnt maTTER IF HE OPENED OR NOT ALL DOGS HAVE A CHANCE TO SEE WHAT IT IS CANT BE FAULTED FOR HArking in but after a smell of deer it has to return back no matter if it opens or not. if it doesnt return it gets scratched.!most judges wont ecven give time to come back but its in the rules u have to give the dog a chance to return.!

I got one scratched once for going in to check a hound that was running a deer and he didn't come back to me but went into the briars and hunted where the other hound left with the deer. He didn't handle well so he hesitated when I called so he was scratched for not returning immediately. I told th judge that he returned immediately to hunting and should not have been scratched but the judge said that he should have returned immediately to me. The hound did NOT follow the other hound, he did not open, did not break into a run, he just went on down the hill hunting. I let it go as a bad break. By the way, scratch all but blue on the q.

Mark, You didn't tell us the format so we would know which rule book we are using. Green did not run off game! A natural trash proof dog will NOT return to your feet but will egnor the chase and continue hunting. Only a dog that has been broke off deer will return to your feet, they are afraid of being shicked again. I personally would rather a natural over a broke dog. If the rule is written that they must return to your feet, then you have to break a naturally trash proof dog, That's dumb!
Judgement call to me.
First, was the dogs scenting or sight chasing. Heck, ever had a dog bark and chase a cow? or horse or goat? or house cat around the yard?
If noses were down or they didn't see it all together, then scratch all dogs except blue.
Then ask why they brought trashy dogs to a trial!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mark I heard about that last weekend. Funny how some of the dogs placed that went on a deer race.
