Who said it's hard on a dogs liver? I've heard it said before, just wondering where the proof of that is. My vet says give them 1 cc/month year round. I've been doing it for over 20 years and haven't had any dog of any size show negative side effects. The active ingredient in Heartguard is ivomectin and any vet will prescribe it to any dog for monthly use.
hookset are you giving a full cc of ivomec or am I reading your post wrong? I was under the impression all that was needed was a tenth of a cc per ten pounds.
east80kennels wrote:panacure, the ivomac is very hard on a dogs liver over time so if u love your dog i would not recomend using it. if u have tape worms get tape worm pills.
east80kennels are you using panacur for heartworms?
According to my vet, 1/10 cc per 10 pounds is the correct dosage for heartworm prevention. To get the intestinal worms, you need to use a little more. He recommends 1 cc per 25 pounds for all purpose worming, and using other wormers only for tapes. He also said that Panacur/Safeguard has been used so heavily that even though it's a good wormer, worms have built up a resistance to it in some places. He's recommending droncit in place of panacur now, or at least advising to rotate between the two.
Ivomic during the warm months for heart worms 1/10 cc per 10 pounds of body weight and the all wormer pill from chip every 3rd month, Ivomic is the same active ingrediant in the heart worm tabs that is prescribed by vets. Not only do they prescribe it but want you to keep your dog on it year round. So i don't understand how a vet can say it is hard on a dog when they usually want your dog on it year round....DH

I once had a Vet tell me the same thing, and then turn right around and try to prescribe Heartguard. When I showed him the ingredients on the label he replied I guess you can use it.
My Old beagle just died at 14 years old and my little Australian Terrier lived to be 17 years old on Ivomec. How much longer do you want them to live? I have several dogs in the 8 year old range that have been on it their entire life. I have yet to have a dog die prematurely. I watched a show about parasites and they prescribed Ivomec to the guy that had a parasite infestation.
1cc is an overkill for a beagle.... and if your doing it for intestinal worms its better to use a broad spectrum wormer like Pancuer (ie Safeguard) or drontal plus.. Its less hard on the liver though apparantly some dogs can tolerate a full cc every month. I just wouldn't risk it.

Ive went through one cycle of this stuff called marical solution im not the promoter for it but i will say it get the worms out of them my dogs have been eatin plenty of rabbit and this stuff is gettin the tape worms right out of them. Can also put it in the dog house with the straw and it will keep all bugs out fleas and such.

ivomac was designed for cattle to start off with and the calling for it was 1 cc per 110lbs of weight and if u divide that into 2 thats a half cc equalls 55lbs of weight and then again divide that that is 27 1/2 lbs which equals 1/3 of a cc on a 15 inch normal size beagle. so if ur going to use the stuff that is what you should be givin him/her unless u run a smaller beagle which then it should then be 1/10 of a cc i ran cattle for years and know a little about the ivomac wormer.
As explained to me once by a Vet, a cows system is different than a dogs.
I have yet to see it do damage to any of my hounds, and they have lived long healthy lives, if that's not proof I don't know what is.
I have seen a lot of the same wormers used in animals used on humans. Ivomec as well as praziquantel to treat parasite infestations. To each his own I will continue using what has worked for me. The old country rural vets usually will give you good information, a lot of the newer vets aren't going to share as much information, especially in suburban areas.

If you weren't interested in being a smart ass you would realize I agreed with your post. 1cc is an overkill for heartworm preventative.... Also I said in my post that there are dogs that do fine with 1cc a month for intestinal worms but it is a fact pancur is safe for their livers and kidneys. Ask your vet which one is safer.... or just read the labels.. That works too.
