Fed them both for over a year each, Blue Buffalo 1st then TOTW for a year after that. Fed Purina HI Pro before that and dogs had no stamina for all day hunts every day. Dogs did great on both feeds you mentioned, less stool, good energy, but when they almost hit $45 a bag i switched to Diamond Naturals Chicken and Rice. I have been feeding Diamond for 4 years right thru the last recall (some TOTW recalled too during that) and dogs are doing just as good as they were on Blue Buffalo and TOTW. I did not use the salmon blend at all. Only thing i see different is the amount of stool and that's due to higher ash content in Diamond Naturals. I also don't run June July and August when kids are off school (keeps the peace at home for the other 9 months of the year) and dogs maintain their weight on all three, bloated up on Purina. JMO, hope it helps.
Why didn't you just feed em mashed potatoes then...??? Because apparently squeak could go all day with no trouble or maybe the dogs with no stamina just sucked...

So in one post, "they just have it and there is NOTHING you can do to make your dogs better and here you say, my dogs did not have stamina to get the job done.. You cannot have it both ways... not that the article dealt with the type of food just when they get it. Maybe if you woulda fed em before a hunt they woulda had stamina. maybe not but its god to know there are options.... or maybe ill just go buy potatoes..

amen brother. the state of the economy and this is what our money is spent on. they should study how to get people pff welfare by feeding them 3 squares a day or let them be hungry.
You do realize the government did not fund this study right? And as it being a complete waste of time. I am sure dog trainers will train dogs differently as a result. Prob not beagles but labs and bird dogs more than likely... This is what we call progress in society. Sure its not a homerun or curing cancer but it will save people time and effort when training their dog which makes life more fun. I guess i feel bad for you that you can't see the value in things like these...

Mo5000, NOPE I STAND BY EVERY WORD I TYPED, and i dont have a hound now like "Squeak" either or a couple others like i use to have. Their not bad, but aint no Squeak (i think Mike could vouch for Squeaks ability to probably run on potatoes too). I also never said i dont feed a quality feed, i said, "YOU CANT FEED A DOG DESIRE", and i can out work the 5-6 small meal a day, nonsoda drinking, gym membership people i work with eating a couple big macs and fries after my shift. I also worm my hounds with ivomec and panacure on a schedule too. That particular post someone asked for a opinion of those feeds and since ive fed them i gave a reply. The old Purina Hi Pro, my hounds packed on pounds the months i was keeping the peace at home, hence the switch to feeds that didnt bloat them. The TOTW, Blue Buffalo and Diamond keep them in good shape in the off months. That has nothing to do with DESIRE tho, and the need to feed hounds before you hunt them. So if you want to get down on your knees and give your hounds electrolytes and smear peanut butter in their mouths before you run them, .... go ahead. I will stick to feeding mine once a day which is at night.[/quote]
Thats my whole point!! No where did or or the article say you could "feed you dog desire"... Just that "what" and possibly, "when", we feed them can affect performance (maybe)... If it doesn't when you feed em then why do you just do it at night? why not twice one day none the next? or at any random time? Dogs will still run a rabbit in any of the cases described but they may or may not run better if you feed em once a day or twice a day or whatever.... Thats why these studies are good. If they proved beyond a doubt feeding your dog at 428pm every other day produced more champions than any other way, I bet most people would start feeding at 4:28... Lots and lots of people give their hounds dog forte, peanut butter, gatorade, cheese, or a little piece of whatever before a hunt and thinks it helps.. Why not try to figure it out conclusively instead of just guessing?
NEWT-- University of Kentucky funded the study-- Probably through a private grant. If it was a public funded grant, usually it would have mentioned it in the abstract. It doesn't actually say in this one. Behavioural Processes Volume 91, Issue 3, November 2012, Pages 313–317
